Aperture Grill vs. Shadow Mask

Ah the age old question; Aperture Grill; or Shadow Mask?

I'm going to be buying a 19" CRT here soon, and I need to answer this question for myself. I'm somewhat bothered by the guide wires in AG monitors. So I got to thinking, what is the real downside of Shadow Mask? Less brightness yes, but there's got to be more, right?

For reference, of those who are just curious; I'm trying to decide between the NEC FP912SB-BK (Aperture Grill), and the NEC FE990-BK (Shadow Mask).

Your input is appreciated.
 
People say that the brightness with SM CRTs is lower than that of AG ones, but in my experience the former are more than bright enough. Even now I've got the brightness on the SM CRTs I'm currently using set to just around 70%.

As far as I can see there's no real disadvantage to SM CRTs compared to AG CRTs, but I do know that I like the fact that there aren't two visible lines on the screen to bother me.
 
"Flat" shadow mask monitors are not flat. I personally use a AG monitor on my primary system. On another system I have a flat shadow mask. The sm was the first flat monitor I ever bought so it looked flat compared to by old bubble monitor, but after using my AG for awhile it just looks like a bubble monitor with a flat piece of glass on the outside. Maybe it is just the case with the particular sm monitor I have, but I'm not too sure on that.

The flat SM CRT I'm currently using in my dual display setup looks pretty flat to me, even when compared to AG CRTs and LCDs.

And even if it isn't perfectly flat, who really cares?

Obviously you don't, but it is noticable to me. I'm pretty sure it would go away over time using it. Wouldn't even be noticable, but it is a difference.

Let me put it this way: I'd rather have a CRT that is ever so slightly curved than a CRT that has two visible wires running over the display. The latter would continue to annoy me, whereas the former wouldn't even be an annoyance.

At least we've moved on from the 'fishbowl'-type of CRT, like the 14" CRTs I'm still using with my servers :)
 
Nothing much really bad about shadow mask based CRTs, but I use an AG so what do I know. :p

Shadow mask seems to offer sharper text too. The Viewsonic G90F is a winner.
