What is the difference between between a Smart ups and a regular ups? I noticed the smart ones are much more expensive but are they worth the extra money?

for UPS devices, i think there are two big steps for quality. #1 is having it output a pure sine wave (or at least close to it) instead of a square wave. #2 is to constantly run off the converted power (from the battery i think) instead of running on AC from the wall then switching to the battery when the AC fails. This means there is no transition in the supply of power.
I think the Smart UPS gives you these features, and thats why it costs more.

The way I think of it is that the regulars are for desktops and the smarts are for servers.
Or something like that anyway.

Not necessarily. My uncle had his APC BackUPS replaced with a SmartUPS because the PCP&C PSU he was using refused to run off of a stepped sine wave. Some hardware, high end PSUs, HT equipment, etc., will not run unless you've got a pure sine wave.

In addition to waveform output they have different surge ratings, different runtimes, different capacities, different filtering......
Does the unit have to be APC? While some APC products are good comparable products are often much cheaper.
Thanks for the replies and didn't realize this should have gone in the power supply area. No, it doesn't have to be APC. APC and Belkin are the only two brands I am familiar with. I found an APC 1500va smart ups refurbished on ebay for $200 and I was thinking of getting it. I also saw a Belkin in the hot deals forum I was thinking of getting too.
After having my computer shut down a couple of times when the power would go out for a few seconds, I decided to get one. I figure my computer draws about 300-400w of power.
