So...any tips? Someone mentioned putting powerchute on the vm's themselves, but that doesn't make much sense to me since the esx server would still get a hard shut down. There a way to tie into the esx server and shut down the vm's before the esx server has to power down?

With the business versions of powerchute you can run scripts from it. Pretty much have a script setup to run a shutdown command to the vms.

I used scripts and programs found here to kick off the shutdownn of the esx server, this in turn shuts down the vm's cleanly.

There used to be a free version that does work for ESX3, but the new version is pay only (per host).

We use an open source utility called apcupsd to manage the UPS. It's installed in one machine connected to the UPS and a second vMA machine. In the event of a power outage the two apcupsd daemons communicate and the one in vMA runs a script against ESXi kicking off a shutdown of the VM's and then the host.
