Hello,

I am trying to find a good surge protector with battery for my new build. I was able to find this one on newegg, what do u guys think? I am building a top on the line PC. This one has 5 battery slots and 2 surge protectors (with ought the battery) my other question is, do the 5 battery slots come with the surge protector?

All sockets are surge protected.

That UPS might be overkill - use the UPS selector tool on the APC web site to check what capacity you need.

I'd recommend the Corsair 750W over that PSU. Make sure you really need 800W - that's a lot of power.
 
If I plug the 800W UPS to my outlet will it constantly be draining 800W from my house or how does it work?
 
I need something similar. I had an ES 350 and I discovered with the rig I have caused mine to overload and shut down because I was draining too much power. So I'm looking at the same model. Anyone have the APC BR1500LCD? Plunking down $215 plus shipping worth it?

It draws the power it needs. If your computer only needs 150W, then 150W will be drawn from the power supply and, due to efficiency around 80% or so, about 185W will be drawn by the PSU from the wall.

If your computer is going to draw about 400-500W on a regular basis, then you need an 800W PSU (or so). But if your computer only draws 200W, then you likely don't need much more than a 500W PSU.

As far as the UPS goes, you only need as much capacity as the computer draws for the time you need - if you want to run for say 20 minutes, then you need a biggish UPS. If you only need time to shutdown, you only need a smallish UPS.

The APC web site has a UPS selection tool - you specify what your computer is all about and it suggests appropriate UPS choices.

if you have BB close by, they can be easily had at around $159 + tax and you can use some coupons around the net for extra 10% off... oh BTW I got these for $114 back then, it was on clearance before...
 
I had spent 2 month trying to get the right parts for my new build, and I still haven’t ordered any. I really want to make this decision as simple but as wise as posseble. Overall would u guys say this is a good APC? Should I go ahed and order it?

where are you located?did you read my post?bb has them cheaper than newegg (dont you have a BB close by)? your making my head hurt :)
 
I guess I do, but I mean how much cheeper? I will be placing a BIG order on newegg so $20-$30 will not make a big diff to me...
 
well i think im looking at a different model (mine was 865 compare to 900), well price difference would be $80-100 if you include shipping on your order because @ my BB it was 159+ tax yours would be $215+$28+tax?.. you can always check it out yourself then...

According to Corsair you won't ever need 500W average - you can run comfortably on a 500W PSU with headroom to spare.

You need to configure your computer better - how many drives in that thing? Are you overclocking? etc. Then you need to determine your real needs for the PSU - use a tool like the one at the link I provided.

Once you have the PSU figured out, then you need to figure out what size UPS you need - based on your actual needs - do you expect to run the computer for a specific period of time on battery or do you only need enough capacity to shutdown? If you only need a 500W PSU, you probably only need a much smaller UPS. No sense giving your money away. Use a tool like the one on the APC web site to size the UPS.

You've been pointing to expensive PSU/UPS combinations - you probably need half the price you're thinking of paying. You will likely spend at least $200 over your needs if you keep doing what you propose.

Do you mean folding@home or similar? If so, that doesn't affect the choice of UPS. Even if the folding gets your quad to max out, that's still going to be within your PSU's limits. Don't forget you can turn off the monitor and there's no reason for the graphics card to max out when running ...@home - it's not a game. You will only run on battery till you shut down - no sense spending to run all night on battery if you lose power. If you do want to run all night on battery, then you need $thousands for a serious standby power system, not a UPS.

I run my desktop, server, and 24" CRT from it, and under full load, it barely hits 600w according to the software for the UPS.
Server has dual 2.4ghz Xeons, 16 hard drives, and water cooling. The desktop has a Q6600, 6 hard drives, and a 7900GT. The monitor takes 150w out of that 600. So unless you expect the power to go out for a very long time, I wouldn't bother with a UPS that large.

The top one is what I have and it works great. It's more than I need right now but I might run a second computer off it soon for some network storage. Currently my PC + 17" CRT + router is about 220w idle and 270w full load. It gives me an estimated runtime of 32-33 minutes in the monitor.:) It was cheaper when I got it though. Newegg had it for $199.99 + $22.02 shipping a couple months back. If it weren't on sale when I was shopping I would have probably gotten something a lot smaller.
 
go to BB trust me it is $159 dont trust the website pricing...YMMV but it is worth a try...

It's $199 at BB.

For that particular model there is no difference between the BR (Newegg version) and BX (retail, Best Buy version) but be careful with other models. Some like my model have differences in the AVR where the BR (aka RS) version has both Boost and Trim and the BX only has Boost.

Can anyone confirm this? I just grabbed one of these from BB based on these two posts. Used this 10% off coupon and got it for $180 +tax.
