The Associated Press filed a lawsuit against Moreover, VeriSign's news aggregation services, in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York today.

The AP said it sent a cease-and-desist letter to Moreover in September, asking it to stop including AP content in its services because Moreover does not license the content. Moreover has failed to comply, so now the AP seeks damages and a permanent injunction against the companies, the AP said.

The bad thing is, being sued by any company is hard to keep “low profile”. Getting sued by the Associated Press means there is no hope of a “low profile” case. Everyone in the world will read about it in the morning news. It’s worse than being sued by CNN. Ouch.

So when AP prints a story about itself sueing Moreover, will Moreover carry the story?

Hm. Well, unlike Google they are a fee-driven service, which is a huge hit against them. And from what I saw it looks like they reproduce the whole article, which is just as bad if not worse. Not that I don't think Verisign could use a black eye, since I don't really approve of how they do business or think that something as important as DNS should be left to a contractor...
Google's claim that exerpts do not constitute infringement seems to be proper, despite their settlement. I mean, they linked to sites who did license AFP articles where a user could read it in full thus benefiting the licensee. Moreover seems to index full newswires without permission, which is pretty much an open and shut case as far as copyright goes.
