AOL has pulled the plug on Netscape and no one really noticed. Sad to see them go out this way after so many years. Thanks to [H] forum member RoBo for the link.

Netscape Navigator, the world's first commercial Web browser and the launch pad of the Internet boom, will be pulled off life support Feb. 1 after a 13-year run. Its current caretakers, Time Warner Inc.'s AOL, decided to kill further development and technical support to focus on growing the company as an advertising business.

Let's face it, Netscape was dead years ago. After AOL bought them and then chose to relicense IE, it was over.

I used Netscape up until I tried Firefox (probably 1.0)....there are somethings on Netscape that I liked better (the button to open a new tab), but there were very few of those.

It's a bit sad, but the truth is that at this point, I'd probably CompUSA more than netscape (mostly because there's not computer stores in this town).

Netscape died because they fucked up the mail server aspect and folks started looking for a replacement. Too much other stuff to choose from

The product "Netscape" is dead, but Mozilla/Firefox was started by Netscape, so it lives on in a way.

Nutscrape has always sucked. I thought it died in the late 90's, lol.

netscape to me is the only brownser i considered as an equal to ie. now it is gone?! i am going to miss it.

aol buy netscape.
what's next now, ati gone?

Mozilla>Seamonkey retains the netscape interface closer than firefox. I actually like it better with google integrated directly into the URL field and it doesn't have that crappy orange color.

R.I.P. Nutscrape. I miss the days of you having critcal stop errors and this program needs to close.

P.S. You're a piece of shit.

Ahh the memories... watching a nude girl appear on the screen scan line by scan line.

It's about time. When AOL took it over, it went to crap, just like their online service is. Their main problem is the programming rejects they hire. Once AOL took it over, I moved onto something else. Luckily Firefox took off.

Like someone said, AOL should pull the plug on them. Then you would have all these teen lemmings whining because they don't have the biggest POS around on their machine, AIM.

I use SeaMonkey too.. guess I'm not the only one then ;)

I won't miss it, since I have not used it in.....lots of years. I don't think too many other people used it either at this point.

Between IE7 and Firefox, what else would you need?

Back in the day I used Netscape which was a much better browser than the available IE.xx...small footprint compared to IE with more features. I switched back to IE after AOL took over and IE5/6 were made available. Thirteen years on the net is a lifetime...I won't miss it, but knowing it's gone makes me a little sad....losing AOL wouldn't sadden me at all ;)

The title should have read that AOL pulls the plug. That would have been more significant and timely.

Firefox basically is the Netscape browser + many improvements as it's based on Netscape source code that was released back in 1998.

I quit using Netscape years ago when Windows 95B/OSR2/OSR2,1 received the integrated version of IE 4.0. Once they integrated IE into the OS the performance and stability far exceeded what Netscape could ever offer. That was my experience anyway. So after that I used IE exlusively until Firefox came out. Sure I tried other versions of Netscape and I've even tried the Netscape versions that were essentially Netscape skinned versions of Firefox, but I never got used to them and quit using it altogether.
