AoC trial

The game started out pretty good but had some issues. Many people, (as I suspect is the case with all MMOs) didn't like the changes and didn't react well to them. I had no problems with the changes for the most part but the main issues I had a problem with were content based. There are spans of the game that just have no content to speak of. Past that there were bugs that should have been resolved prior to the product's release and weren't fixed more than six months later.

Now with that said, I normally hate MMO games. I can't stand them. Age of Conan is the one I've played and enjoyed the most. Still it coulnd't hold my interest past level 57 or so. I just gave up playing it and let my account expire. I haven't really missed the game since then.

Never played it, but I remembered reading a news story about it not doing so well.

Might not want to get too attached:

I and my friends were lucky, we never experienced any of the trouble that we heard about, besides gankers. I stopped for a while and got back into it around december. We still enjoy it, and there's another massive patch coming next week with lots of interesting additions go complement the new areas added in the last one, the stuff that addressed the spans without contend that Dan_D mentions, new instances and areas and all that jazz.. Lots of people are using the trial to come back and dick around on their old accounts, and there's lots of noise in the chat with people saying they're resubscribing. I personally thought all the coverage saying that it was broken and shit and whatnot to be overblown, really. People expecting it to be an automatic "WoW-beater" the moment it was released, all forgetting that it took WoW a while to get in shape.

I play on a PvE server now though, mind. If your old guy was on a PvP server you might get pissed off pretty rapidly, putting it generously they're brutal, and putting it honestly it's populated by dickheads. Loving the PvE though.

Anyway, yeah, just whacking the link in there since I remember people saying they wer elooking for buddy keys.

The game wasn't fun at all. It was a broken grind fest that was getting broken, imbalanced, untested patches thrown at it every week.

I play games to have fun. I don't need to play games, so I'm certainly not going to throw money at a company monthly and hope their game turns mediocre, then later on sorta fun.

The PvP was fine if you are used to a PvP game where FFA is the norm; however, the game lacked in the end game and dungeon PvE areas, city building, and item/character/stat customization areas. These areas pretty much killed the game and after 6 months they still had done nothing to address them and in some cases, ie.e raids, made the game worse and bothced the content so bad most of my friends as well as friends and enemies from other guilds left.

They have a great license in Conan, so lets hope the game is much better now, but I fear it is too little too late.

Actually I would say the game died at the end of the very first month when 500k of their playerbase did not renew their subscription. At that point most players did not care about the end game, as most were still leveling up.

In the first couple weeks after release, while playing you could see the game had great potential. Sure the classes were horribly balanced, sure there were a lot of bugs, and sure a lot of things needed work. But MMO players are generally forgiving when it comes to these things at the launch of a new MMO, usually patches will sort these things out.

What killed the game was that every fucking patch they released in the first month broke more shit than it fixed. They would release a patch to fix issue A, but it would only be a partial fix to issue A, and it would break B C D E and F. Every patch became more and more of a nightmare, to the point where players would frown upon news of a new patch instead of welcome one.

If in that very first month the patches actually did something other than create bugs, worsen performance, introduce exploits, break talents, create even more class imbalance, break instances, break quests - if the patches actually did what they were supposed to then the game would still have a healthy subscriber base today. I'd say maybe around a 1mil subs base, enough to keep them afloat.

I heard they did eventually get their patches to start being helpful/useful, but by then it was too late - the 900k or so people who bought the game had already left in drives and only 100k remain today. Hence the trial, its the only way they can even get people to play their game. Which is sad, the game had potential and the first month of gameplay when all the servers were packed did have fun moments and was worth the 40 bucks to me.

Yep, first impressions are everything.

I leveled my assassin character to 80 in the first month or maybe 2 I cant even remember if I renewed for a 2nd month, i think I did.

Massively broken class, completely unbalanced in PvP, some classes could easily fight 5-6 other people if they were played right, I could be rooted for a duration long enough to kill me even If I had full health.

It was a pathetic, In fact thinking back to how pathetic it was just makes me incredibly mad, the amount of crap I had to go through to complete the main quest chain and them breaking the game every few patches... I don't even want to give them a 2nd chance, they dont deserve it for messing up so monumentally the first time (at least for my class)

Troof!!

I was just trying to be optimistic, and not scare any newcomers away hehe.

I got my Assassin to 80 and my guild started doing end game dungeons. Was fun till we couldn't progress any further do to bugs. Everyone left and some went to war.

I do actually remember that now, and that was the main reason we took our big breaks from the game around august/september last year. Thankfully it's now got to the point where people are foaming at the mouths for each new update, because it actually seems like the new director's listening to people and not just slapping his dick in their faces every time they mention a broken whatever. The whole reason I stopped playing my main character was because the class had so many broken abilities and dicked-with feats that it was a DPS class that didn't actually do any damage. They now seem to be making a lot of headway with new content, gear, areas and instances and dungeons and whatnot.

You see, though, that's meant to be like that. The assassin is a fragile DPS class. The classes that can take on 5-6 same level classes are usually soldiers with lots of stance dancing, and it takes the same amount of time for them to chew through 6 in one go as it does for an assassin to kill 6 one or two at a time.

I personally went back to my lvl 72 barb two weeks ago. I really did fall back in love with the game and the content patch will make it even better :) I'm level 77 now on a pvp server

The trial Island of Tortage is one of the best designed pieces of game world I have ever seen.

However, the rest of the game and world is utter garbage. :(

I must agree. I don't have the time else I would give it another go. My ToS was OP iirc.

He means that tort was very well thought out and implemented. Everything from the quest, progression, trader location was good and even the area graphics wise was well done and varied. It all just fit and is largely ( I think) why so many got hooked early on and got their friends on and the dropped after it ended.

AOC had nice graphics and decent combat, the world is what was lacking IMO. It was all just a series of instances. You cant walk from one city to the next, you take a caravan etc.... The world also lacks good quests and just plain lacks fun.

War is the opposite. Good world, good quests. Crappy graphics and crappy combat.

Yeah, which is why I asked "how do you mean", rather than "what".

It seems like there are a few people in here with some outdated impressions. Just as well there's a free trial going, right?

Tortage was pretty awesome. I actually subbed after the first month because I kept hearing that everything past Tortage was big and open. My gripe with Tortage was the fact that it was small, very instanced. I get out to the real world to find garbage, uninspiring areas with ton of zoning :(.

You know, game did have potential, but to me, it is too late. The fact that it is so instances ruins it for me, not to mention light content to this day even.

FYI: I resubbed last month to check it out left 5 days in.

I am fighting the temtation to give it a go again. My wife refuses to play WoW again after raiding for a living for 2.5 years :) Man that game looked good it was just broken as hell when I played. My HoX was the most underbalanced POS I have ever loved.

Tempest of Set was worse before the storm field changes, lol.

No reuse on Lightening Strike + Thundercast for instant cast = gg, especially when you can crit for 18k every 20 seconds. -.-

I still do not understand how some let their lives get signed away to an MMO :(.

I'm not sure if that's an honest question, but I'll give it a shot. After putting 100+ days /played into a character, gearing it up and such, you start to become attached. Raiding and finally downing a boss you been wiping on for a while is one of the best in game accomplishments and feeling you can have of ANY game. After you play a good MMO for a while all other normal games just feel "meh". If you walked the walk and still don't understand then I don't know what else to tell you. But if you have played and raided, then you should understand. Since there's no end, there's always something to do most of the time. Even if you've done it all, you can always screw around and wait for the next content patch.

Some peoples mileage may vary but I can understand how some people get addicted.

If I already had an account back when the game came out, can I activate it free for the trial and continue playing my character? Or do you have to create a totally separate "Trial" account?

I'm playing one now. It's a powerhouse, and the most fun of all the classes as far as I'm concerned.

That seems to be what a lot of other people are doing. There've been quite alot of changes though, so you might find a respec in order.

Trust me I understand, hell, I sometimes am the same way. I got pretty hard core with LOTRO and got attached to it :p.

But to me, its different. When I had to, I would stop playing to take care of RL stuff. Sure, I skipped gym and basketball to get few more hours in each day, but truly important things? I guess I just don't understand how couples can allow themselves to get that "attached" .

For me and my wife it was somthing we enjoyed doing together. It was a hobby we could be competitive with each other on a even playing field. It really didnt bother me if she was better then me or if I was better then her. It was just fun. And then it became like a job, I quit before a deployment and she quit when I came home. Now we have other shit to do and I play for fun.

I resubbed last month to check out the changes. Funcom has made some massive strides with the game. Perforamance, even with DX10test on, is smooth as butter. On my laptop (Gateway P-7811FX), I can run full DX10 minus AA. On my desktop, I run full DX10 with 4xAA and it runs like a champ. They even managed to make load times much, much shorter.
The server merges helped out the population issues and there always seems to be quite a few people online whenever I log in.

I think it's definitely worth a re-look. My only gripe now is the lack of PVP on my PVE server.

Some people have compulsive disorders. Addiction can be very damaging. Some people get into a state where they do not know how to moderate it. My friend is on WoW all his free time and he has a young son. I'm surprised his wife puts up with it, mine wouldn't! ;)

You can't get addicted to an MMO, you can however lose sight of your priorities while engrossed in one. A great deal of people find a balance between the 2 things but just decide to spend their spare time playing.

You shouldn't assume playing an MMO a lot means that person has let it take over their lives or has become addicted, in a lot of cases it might be true, but certainly not all. A lot of hardcore MMO players still maintain jobs etc.

Not all get addicted but I have seen it clearly with certain ppl. He even says he needs his fix

Addiction isn't possible in the traditional meaning of the word, mental "addiction" is something a bit different and shouldn't really be called addicition at all.

What's the raiding scene like in AoC now?

I stopped playing my 80 ToS before my 1st month was up at launch...never got past T2 guild city I don't think, had my full t0 blue set...never really did any raids aside form Yakhmar and that dragon thing.

It would be interesting to see what everyone else thinks. Is it possible to get addicted to an MMO in the 'traditional' meaning of the word addiction?

Webster states addiction is

1: the quality or state of being addicted <addiction to reading>
2: compulsive need for and use of a habit-forming substance (as heroin, nicotine, or alcohol) characterized by tolerance and by well-defined physiological symptoms upon withdrawal ; broadly : persistent compulsive use of a substance known by the user to be harmful

I am new to the game, but I signed up for the trial. I have a level 15 toon. Couple of questions...

1. When do I leave the island? I believe it at level 20, correct?
2. I think I read in here that you don't run/ride from city to city, you are in an instance. What are the mounts used for? Are they simply used for city travel?
3. I am a solo, PVE, explore/questing kind of player. Is this the game for me? Sure doesn't sound like it. For reference, LOTRO is my usual poison. just need a change of scenery, but don't want to waste my time.
4. Can PVP be avoided? I am on a PVE server, so I assume there are PVP zones or PVP can be switched on/off....

I tried to find these answers on the forums (dead) and ingame (not the best community) so thanks for the help.

Can't help you there, not hit 80 myself since I restarted on a PvE server to avoid the hooting kids milling around dicking with people on my old server. I hear it's very active though, the chat is full of people looking for members/groups for level 80 instances, and new level 80 dungeons and all that stuff has been introduced.

1: when you finish the night time jobs. That can be from 19 or 20, or 22+ if you decided to stick around and finish the daytime quests up. I actually couldn't fall asleep last night so, to check out the class I made a conqueror, and managed to get it from 5 - the level you start at when you leave the beach area - to 19 in four hours with some savvy quest management and familiarity with the layout.

2: mounts are used to travel across and through areas. You take "wagoneers" to main areas and cities, which are just NPCs that initiate a loading screen. The mounts are used to travel across areas and in sieges.

3: Yep. There are group instances and some group quests denoted by a trio of MSN-style icons next to the log in your journal, but you're not required to play with anyone for normal jobs. You can solo this with no worries, as long as you're familiar with what you're doing. I had a very hard time of it when I started because I didn't really understand the combat system properly, but once you get used to the fact that you have to constantly reposition yourself to line your attacks up to hit the maximum numbers of enemies/vary which attacks you use depending on their finishing direction and the enemy's shields/when and in which direction to double-tap that sort of noise. Unless you're a magic class, in which case it's just plain old hotkey-hammering, castbar-watching ACTION.

4: On PvE servers, yes. You can choose to participate in sieges or minigames if you want, but you're not obliged to play against others on PvE servers.

Are the forums really "dead" for you? They're very active from what I've seen, but I'm on EU servers.

Excellent great info! I'm just coming from LOTRO, so the US forums are a bit "quiet" in comparison, shall we say. Thanks again!

Yes people get treated for it not just MMOs even computer gaming. A person can get addicted to anything that involves any type of repetitious behavior. No it does not have to involve substances. Traditional Addiction medically is defined by the DSM IV (big medical jargon book psychologists and medical doctors use as diagnose criteria guidelines) Desired repeated behavior or substance with withdrawal symptoms, in this case irritable or mood changes if not playing the game.

Games do not chemically alter the brain. They are not definitively "addictive", they just provide a sort of escapism that the emotionally needy and dependent can find too appealing. There's no actual "addiction" taking place.
