My rig has been down for like a yr...well, the audio. We moved and setting up the computer room took some time. Anyway, I just got the Ultra 5.1's back up....OMF! I had forgotten just what the little fuckers can do. If I do recall...they are like 470rms or some shit...I am blown away.

POINT>> Anything else out there that can stomp these yet?

For PC speakers, I'd be surprised if there was anything that can take them out pound for pound. There are several stereo PC speakers that can best the Ultras, but none which are 5.1.

I have not kept up on my pc audio for a while...so was just curious.

Speaker wise, the Crambridge Soundworks S750 speakers beat it, but the sub woofer is as lazy as an anemic old man. The klipsch subwoofer cant be touched unless you get a receiver, speaker, subwoofer set up. I would love to get the klipsch but theres too many people complaining that the units die, blown fuse, and then klipsch charges $90 for a new amp replacement. Theres a guy around the upgrades the interior components even adds some air cooling, dont know anyone who has that yet.

I'm on my second unit, first amp died within 2 weeks, got a replacement though microcenter and its been pounding for about a year flawless. I love my Ultra 5.1, and the girl who bought them for me ;)

i still have my old promedia 5.1

the amp died. the resistor board was brown when i opened it up. they definitely need to redesign the subwoofer box to have some better air, or less heat for this model.

You got extra "BROWNIE" points for that I guess

Mine have never had a problem. I have had them for around 3yrs now. I use to play the shit out of them and had zero problems. Plan on doing that again..hehehe..and have been since I hooked them back up. :D damn how these things rock

Just out of curiosity, is the subwoofer at a cool spot, or is it getting enough air, this could add to its life.

Mines have been kicking and screaming for about two years. No problem at all and I've givent them my share of poundage.

8 years and still going on my Promedia 4.1's and I have yet to hear anyone's computer speaker setups that best it.

Though there is audible interference and hissing at this point that can grow to be annoying during moments. Not enough for me to justify replacing them though. I'm in process to replace though soon, I can't see the amp/sub going for much longer.

I use Z-5500's downstairs for HT and Z-680's for the PC upstairs.

No complaints yet. I've demo'd Klipsch and I think it's mostly about preference as opposed to a clear winner. For me, the price and the connectivity did it for me.

That and their incredible customer support and RMA policy.

I didn't have to actually pay for the Z-5500's. :) And I have a backup set of speakers for them.

There haven't really been any new high-end speaker sets released lately. Seems the big boys think our current selection is up to the task.

Same with mine, had them for about the same amount of time. Have to jiggle the main connector on the back of the sub to get some of the channels to work. They just stop working after awhile even though I haven't touched anything.

Any further, and you should be moving into bookshelf territory. Plenty of room for expansion there.

Yes, correct. I am just cheating a little (or a lot) by using my Z-5500's as a poor-man's HT. My next step would likely be for a couple grand to just replace the whole thing with a decent receiver and some much nicer speakers altogether.

But I have to admit I've been very impressed with the ability of the Z-5500's to fill my family room with sound as well as they do with those puny 3" drivers. I'm sure the massive sub helps.

For those who haven't gotten on the bandwagon yet, the AVS Forums has a user-created set of HT demo discs that are simply oustanding for system demos.

Check them out HERE and a summary of the demo discs can be browsed HERE

promedia 4.1's here.. got mine in 2001 and they are still kicking. i'd like one more channel so i'm thinking about getting the 5.1's but it won't be anytime soon... I'm just too pleased with the 4.1's and I don't have the heart to put them in the closet.

has anyone tried pulling the speakers from the 4.1 and using them for with an amp? Perhaps I could do that and replace the surrounds I've got now which are a joke and add in the 6th and 7th channel my receiver already supports. Hrmm..
