anyone w/ HP PSC 1210v problems

I've had my printer for about 4 mos now and I've barely used. It works great, when it works. The problem is 90% of the time it freezes up my machine. When I load the drivers, and install it, everything works fine. But when I restart or log off it takes windows anywhere from 10-15 minutes to display the icons when i click my computer (the search icon appears and at the status bar it says "Windows is searching for icons" or something like that; and sometimes it makes explorer crash. I've tried the newest drivers on HP's site and the ones on the cd. My gf got the same printer and i tried her cd and it still doesnt work. I called HP and they kept saying it's microsoft's fault. I'm kinda thinking that the printer is messed up, because my gf's printer doesnt have that problem. I used HP's driver cleaner app, and it doesnt help much either. If anyone has any suggestions outside of trying to RMA it, let me know.

Is there any generic print drivers you can use, which doesn't involve using the software included with the HP printer.

Or can you just pull the inf files right off the CD and bypass installing all their utlities.

i was gonna try that when i get home from work. I don't think the other utilities are the problem because ive uninstalled everytthing except for the hp drivers and still had the same problem. HP has a document manager gui, and i think that might be the problem. when I get home tho ill give it a shot. Thanks
