Anyone using non RE WD drives with Software RAID?

Hi,

I have 3x 320GB Western Digital harddrives which are not the Raid Edition models. I am wondering if i can use them with Linux Software RAID and if that will cause problems with them timing out with errors or does that just happen with Hardware RAID cards.

Is anyone successly using these drives in software RAID?.

I'm using standard WD drives in hardware RAID 5, I don't see what the issue is.
 
Ditto, pair of non-RE 320G's in a RAID1 for a few months now, no issues. Eventually bump it to a RAID5.
 
Non-TLER WDs are a ticking time bomb. They may work fine now, but if they ever have to do extended error recovery, the controller may drop the disk from the array and cause problems quickly. I don't know how LSR deals with them, but I wouldn't risk it myself.

 
thanks for the replies guys, i think i will not raid the drives to just to be on the safe side and just make a Rsync script to run nightly to keep things in sync. this will also offer some protection from user(me) error(rm -rf *) :)
