Hi

Was searching the net for some internet privacy protection and came across a site which I find very interesting. I have a few questions which I hope someone can answer for me. I maybe stupid but I could not really make out the difference between the 3 services they provide..VPN, Socks Proxy and SSH Proxy. The programs I use and wish to anonymize is Msn Messenger 7.5, DC++ and Kazaa..or any other filesharing program..Which of the above services, VPN, Socks Proxy or SSH Proxy, is best suited for complete anonomity for the above programs? I do realize that I must create a new hotmail account to be protected. Do I need to change any preferences within Messenger, DC++ and Kazaa or is it enough to just connect to the VPN and run any program? Anyone here who has experience from Findnot..?.

What you are asking for doesn't really exist.
On the File Sharing side sooner or later you are exchanging packets with the system that has the file you want. If you do that they have your IP address. There are a few systems working on this problem - Tor comes to mind, but its really not designed for File Sharing in the way you are thinking and as a result has a much smaller group making use of it at this time.

If you make use of someone else's anonymous proxy service you have to trust them not to reveal what you are doing. So you have to ask, can you trust a random website with your privacy? Wasn't that long ago Federal Task Force got a warez kid to roll and setup a "secure" IRC server for the rest of the group...

As for hotmail... it's only a subpoena away from whatever IP your connected from, not to mention whatever data is in the emails themselves. Also the joy of whatever they have of your "deleted" emails still on the servers. But sure you can access hotmail via a proxy right? See the point above this one.

I'm sure I can come up with more, but hopefully this gets the point across.
 
Using p2p programs through a proxy really isn't practical. It might be doable, but the speeds will be shit and there's a good chance the proxy will be closed pretty quickly once they notice the increase in bandwidth usage. I don't know if I would trust a pay service for true anonymity. If they log stuff then it's really not anonymous.
