I was wondering if anyone here has used Proxmox in a corporate environment for managing virtual machines? I've checked their page and I see it's based off KVM technology and is fully open source (which we prefer) but I don't know if it's along the same lines of VMware ESXi and other well known virtual technology.

Anyone have any info about Proxmox?
 
I used it for a couple of years. It's a full distro on top of debian, as far as I can recall. Decent web based gui...
 
Was it reliable? I use Debian Linux for all my servers so I know exactly how amazing Debian is but in regards to handling virtualization? How many VM's did you manage? Any issues or complaints?
 
Well, this was a small home setup, and it worked fine there. That was several years ago, so I can't comment as to how it works now. It does have the advantage of being able to support both kinds of virtualization, but honestly, nowadays, with the strides esxi has made (and having a fast xeon), I can't even tell I'm running a guest virtualized.
 
We used Proxmox for a long time on several nodes (about a dozen OpenVZ guests per host). Works fine, but it can have problems with upgrades, especially if you need to upgrade the core Debian installed underneath. We have been testing Proxmox 2.0 internally and are impressed with it. We may roll it out more widely once it's out of beta if they get user management implemented properly.
