putting one ontop of the other... just giving it a thought. the fan on top can accelerate the air, then the air gets accelerated even more by the fan on the bottom. this way, air can hit the hs fast and furious style... or am i missing something?
 
This method of using fans is just a waste IMO.... this is because doubling your fans like this increases noise alot. second of all you will only see a temp difference of 1-3C not much but I guess every little bit helps :D
 
the air speed wont keep increasing. it will only be as fast as the bottom fan can push.
 
Tried it before.....it was terrible. The noise was INCREDIBLE with a tornado and a slower 80 mm fan on top of eachother. I'm still deaf. :(
 
there is a heatsink/fan solution out that does this, one fan rotating clockwise, the other counter-clockwise - which they state will take out more of the dead spot in the middle. i forget what it's called, something like a dual tornado or something. google it. like the others, i doubt it's supposive increased cooling efficiency compared to the increased noise from more air passing through medium 80mm or less, fans.

The static pressure capacity of two fans in series can be doubled at zero air flow condition, but do not increase the airflow in the free-air situation. An additional fan in series increases the volume flow in a higher static pressure enclosure. Thus, in series operation, the best results are achieved in systems with high resistance.

Just wondering how quiet/loud your pc is
 
I remember one time, quite awhile ago. This was on a K6-2 450mhz. My Dad modded his heatsink so that he had one fan on top (like normal), and one fan on the side blowing to the left. It actually worked damn well.

the question would be which one, the sig?
first there is the AC that force feeds the enclosure
then there are 3x120mm hotswaps in midcase of a 4U rackmount
plus the PSU and a small crossflow fan, and the 2x80s on the CPUs
but thats all just temporary till my computer room is finished
there I have an insultated "closet" with a dedicated AC with a precooler
and a chipchiller that will house my 40U Rack,

Fast and furious style? So u mean it won't work since it was fake?! Or u didn't know it was fake? But yeah same concept here. 2 stickers don't make it better then 1 sticker without understanding how 2 stickers work together properly! :p
 
Basically it will not work unless you have special equipment. The two fans will just fight each other, creating a lot of turbulence and noise with no extra airflow.

What you need is two fans with opposite fin orientation, so that they can turn in opposite directions but push air the same direction. This is suppose to do the trick however I don't know how beneficial it is considering it hasn't become a popular method amongst HSF manufacturers (they know what they're doing for the most part).
 
A simple mod that will help with the dead spot created by the body of the fan is to make a space between the fan and the heatsink, so that the airflow is more equally distributed. One way that works is to gut an old fan and put it between the HS and the working fan. The outer shell of the dead fan should be all that remains. There are adapters on the market that do the same thing, however.
 
^^ but won't the extra leverage be bad for the hs? like it might get pulled off or something.
 
i've tried this before...

but there's a trick to it... initially i've stacked 2 120mm fans (both of similar specs)... but the turbulance cancelled the airflow :( so i improvised a shrud by using a foam doublesided tape! thus making a 1mm gap between the fans. This REALLY works!

but don't expect the CFM to be doubled... it's just about 10%-15% increase in CFM but the preassure does increase as ice czar said. Work beautifully with my P3's casing with air filter in front.

the second time i did this was modded 4 80mm 0.13A fans... these were cheap ass 80mm fans... but after stacking 4 of these babies, i manage to get air to be pushed from the front of the casing to the back at the cpu.. the fans was located at the cdrom bay.

just my 2 cents
