I've managed to cram a variety of unusual items into the Shuttle to make it a more complete backage. Instead of a wireless ethernet card, to save the extra PCI expansion slot I've wired up a Benq wireless USB adapter to the USB headers on the board, also fit a laptop harddrive in there via USB to increase capacity.

Anyway, the next thing I'm thinking of is a UPS. Unfortunately I tried to stick an Opteron 146 onto a v2. SN95G5 board and the chipset revision doesn't officially support this CPU so the computer will freak out when it loses power. It'll really be a hit and miss hassle whether or not the system will turn on or not (takes some random combination of plugging and unplugging the main power from the PSU, hitting power, reset, over and over again). Sometimes it takes me up to an hour to get the system to cooperate and coax it into turning on properly again.

I figure I can save myself the hassle if I can install a UPS into the system so that it never goes totally off or at least if I have to unplug the system to move it (even for 5-10 min) the UPS could power the Shuttle.

Are there any UPSs small enough to fit into a SFF case?

Your problem isn't chip related. If it was chip related it wouldn't work at all. Opterons work in any 939 board, whether they are officially supported or not.

Next time you get it booted, I would try a bios update, but it's probably a problem with either the memory or CPU not getting enough voltage at startup. (DFI is infamous for those "fun" cold boot problems. ...it looks like you would know that! ;) ) Try raising it, if you can, but that may not make a difference. I don't know if that model Shuttle has issues, but check on the SFFTech forums to see if it's a common issue.

Oh yeah! I really know about the DFI cold boot issues with my old computer years ago. The Shuttle has similar cold boot issues, and yes it's a problem specifically with the v2 chipset of the SN95G5 (the v3 fixes it). I purchased this CPU when it was on the authorized compatibility list on Shuttle's site when they later removed to my chagrin and I found it it has these problems.

Basically the power button has little or no functionality, the system will boot right when power is plugged into it, but usually it'll just be the fan spinning at full speed with no actual post. Some random combinations of plugging and unplugging and pressing the power button or hitting reset over and over again will force the system to post eventually but it takes a lot of time and attempts. The CPU voltage is as as high as I need it to be at this overclock and raising it higher does not help posting. Unfortunately it only offers 2.9v to ram as a max (compared to 3.3v for DFI) but I've tried low voltage ram with the same problems.
 
Well the cold boot problems were supposed to be due to the chip not getting enough juice at boot. It did not matter whether you had it set to run 2.0v through the chip - it did not make a difference. You probably knew that...

If you like that case, I'd just get a V3 and sell that one on eBay. End that frustration!
