Woohoo! Glad I didnt purchase the D100. Looking at the new D70, if I had, I would be pissed at myself. It retails for $999 for body and, $1299 with the 18-70mm DX Lens. Ah if you visit Nikon, they have a chance to win one.
www.nikonslr.com/home.html
Either way it will be out in March so, now I know what Im getting as my next.

good paper specs, i hope that its real world performance will match them

ooo! oooo! ..mee mee !!! *raises hand* :)

i was so ready to by a dSLR when my tax return came in.. but now i'm willing to wait a couple more months for the Nikon.
It's going to be hard having the cash while forcing myself to wait for the reviews to come out, i figure its going to be April-May at least before we truly know how good the D70 is. i really hope it lives up to the specs.

Not a better camera.

Well, let me correct that.

It's debateable.

If history is any indication the 300D will have better image quality. But as far as features the Nikon D70 has it trumped.

But, the Rebel is a nice $300 cheaper with the kit lens. Although, the Nikon kit lens does give you more zoom.

I'd say if the image quality of the D70 is as good as the D100, then the $1300 D70 and the $1000 Rebel provide about equal value for the dollar.

I agree. Plus did you see the Nikon 8700 it is at $1000 with 8MPs. I dont want one because it isnt a DSLR.

I'm at a loss to find the better specs of the D70 other than the .5 fps, 1/500 sec flash sync, and top deck lcd, 1/8000 shutter speed over 1/4000. None of that sounds too interesting to me.

You're missing a lot of important features. Instantaneous start up time, much faster write times (shooting JPEG large you can do a continous 3fps burst for 144 shots or so), mirror lock-up, much better metering (much better than the 10D in fact, because the D100's metering is still better than the 10D), better white balance, USB 2.0 and a few other things. Most people are speculating that this will not only be a 300D killer, but very competitive with the 10D. At this point I think there is no question that the 10D is significantly overpriced currently compared to what the D70 will offer for $500 less.

i will believe it when i see it

and things like USB2.0 are pretty pointless to most people, you really should have a good CF reader if your shooting some huge pics

anyway, im not a fan of nikon that much... i think canon has really invested a lot into digital... where a lot of the more "traditional" 35mm camera makers havent been very agressive

and hey! if you wait another few years nikon may make a camera that sucks less! :D

unless they truly pull a gold nugget out of their rear, canon > nikon for digital

the buffer is quite impressive, but i would like to see if it can really do that or not...

dont really like the way it looks IMO.. and damn, you thought the flash on the D300 sticks out a lot, look at the popup on the nikon!

argh, i would love to read the specs but their damn watch-me-load-forever flash file isnt working right

this is very true

the one thing that just bothers me about the nikon, is if you look at it, it just looks like a big version of their P&S cameras...

meh, dunno

i am quite happy with my 10D, no regrets :D

I'm REALLY liking this.... I've always been a Nikon fan and have used the Nikon N55 extensivly.

Can't wait to see a real review.

I'm really leaning to buying a Canon but this thing just made me look otherwise

Competition rocks :D

dunno

i dont like the way it looks

like i said before, it looks like a giant nikon p&s camera

im sorry, if im going to spend that much money on a camera i want it to be big and strike fear into the hearts of other cameras

and make people say "wow i bet that was expensive"

the nikon just looks cheap

of course looks are second to function...

but, there is just something meanacing about a 10d with a grip on it :D

dunno, and like i said before, canon just seems to be more into making kick ass P&D and SLR digi cams.. they see the future, and it dosent come in 35mm

also it dosent even have a vertical grip? even the D300 has a vertical grip

and is it just me, or is the Nikon EN-EL3 a near exact physical copy of a Canon BP-511?

I don't agree with you. I think the D70 looks exceptionally good. Much better then the 300D infact. I think you're just biased because you have a 10D.

Or, he just isn't a fan of SLRs with plastic bodies, like myself? :p

Yea im not really a fan of them either but 10D is a little too much for me, unless I find a used or refurbed one.

I agree that the D70 looks farrrrr better than the 300D which looks cheap and unprofessional. I won't be buying till the summer and I *think* Canon will, by that time, have a response to the D70 so I'm just excited to see what happens.

"looks cheap and unprofessional" what the fuck are you talking about? Go see the stuff CanISlayU is doing with that camera. It's fucking amazing.

So since the D70's plastic body is black instead of silver it doesn't look cheap? I thought only women were so concerned with things like looks and colors? Perhaps you also like imacs because of their colors? ;)

Man I'm not hating on your camera because its a fine camera though the D70 does look better.

I'm not saying that the D70 isn't the better camera (hell it better be; it's newer and costs 11% more) but for btb103 to say that the 300D looks cheap while the D70 does not is a bit asinine considering they are both made of plastic; just different colors.

I don't know how, it just does too better.

Color does play a big part in the way the camera is percieved. Do you ever see any pro slr cameras in any other color than black?

Yeah it's generally accepted that black cameras look more professional, sure it's a marketing thing to distinguish consumer level cameras with professional level, but it definitely works. In the preview on DPReview Phil says "I think the image below also demonstrates how much more professional and business like the black bodied and clean-lined design of the D70 looks compared to the EOS 300D."

edit: BTW Bucket did you go to that snowboarding competition today, do you have any shots to share?

People who know that professional SLR cameras have a black metal body would know that the D70 is hardly a "pro" camera. So then why wouldn't a black plastic body be perceived as trying to be something that it's not? Anyways, I guess I'm in the minority caring more about how the pictures come out versus what people who see the camera think (the majority of which know jack shit about cameras in the first place).

Look, I probably know as much about camera's as you or close and I personally think that a black SLR looks better then a silver camera. Silver is usually low end, while black is higher end. That's how it is... Face it.

Obviously you missed my point. Typically those who can make that kind of distinction know enough about cameras in general. That's exactly the reason Canon made the 300D silver in the first place; they didn't want to take away from 10D sales. Just look in this very forum at how many people talk down on the 300D because of it's color and plastic casing.

So my whole point is those who know enough about cameras to make that distinction should know that the color of the camera should NOT be the distinguishing characteristic of what makes the camera "cheap" or "professional." I guess people have a hard time going beyond physical appearance though...

And I remember the thread where 56k talked about wanting "intimidating" equipment and he was ridiculed, even you got your shots in:

The pictures is what makes a photographer professional, not the person nor even the camera for that matter.

But now you want a black camera because it looks more professional...

*slams my head on desk multiple times*

Did I ever say those exact words that I want the D70 because it looks better? Please if I did tell me. I only look at picture quality... If the camera is the same as the 300D in the picture quality I rather dish out a little more just for the look because it makes ME feel good.

If the picture quality will be worse then the 300D then I will soon enough buy a 300D because im not a moron, I don't buy a camera because of its looks.

I'm just saying that the D70 looks better then the 300D, PERIOD. I did not say anything about picture quality or anything like that. I stated that the BODY looked better, that's it.

Assumptions are a bitch eh?

I cannot even believe you people are making such a big deal over colors... I think any professional could take a camera with a pink body and take shots just as good if the camera has the technology. If you took a Canon 300D and then some shots with the Nikon CoolPix5700, which do you think will look better?

I am not sticking up for Canon, nor Nikon. I like both companies products. It really just depends on what the best camera for the money is at the point of purchase.

I am looking to get a DSLR but I am holding out for a bit to see a thorough review of the 70. It's going to be either a 10D, D70, or 300D.

I like having the extra grip that comes with the addon battery, and I know all 3 have them so that's not an issue. From what I've seen, all 3 cameras have pretty equal accessory lines so the bottom line factor will be the functions, picture quality, and price.

Actually, the D70 does not have the option of a vertical grip. It may be possible to mod one on though...

The 10D and 300D are both 6.3 megapixels. The 10D has more options than the 300D. Like firmware upgrades and stuff.

$500 to look cool?

Pretty shallow man but hey, it's your cash lol

*note*

The 10D has better options then the 10D i'm just making a point ;)

Yeah, I just found that out last night.. Damn, I guess it's the 10D for me then.

I need a lockable mirror and the EOS Digital Rebel doesn't have that feature. Crap, $500 is a lot to spend for a mirror that locks.

I cant believe there is an arguement on looks. Personally I dont care what it looks like, all I care about is performance. Who know it may turn out to be a slug, when it comes out so, that would tilt my choice alot. But if it performs as, stated, then Im getting one for sure. And wether it is a plastic body or, steel is not all that relavant as, most thing are made from high impact plastic, these days. Just look at your cars, tons of plastic anymore.

You guys are funny. One thing (not sure if it was mentioned, I gave up at the start of the color war). Its not the camera that takes good pictures its the photographer. Plain and simple. Stop argueing "this camera is better than this camera" and start shooting your brains out with good pictures.

I don't care what kind of camera I have as long as it works, and has the features that will make my picture taking easier. The D70 looks like it will help nikon break that sub-1000 DSLR market. Remember that the camera companies are just playing marketing games with everyone. Pro could care less what camera they are using, just as long as it works when they need it too.

So knock it off, and lets get back to discussing the finer points about photography, like light, and composition, and exposure, and that really neat picture that we all saw at one point or another. Lets leave the marketing bullshiet behind us and get to some really serious stuff.

Cheers,
