Guy got this card in a system he ordered from IBUYPOWER (I tried to warn him) and I can't find info on it anywhere.It's supposed to be 512 MB,but I thought the 8600 GTS was 512,this card is marked 8600 GT.It also lacks the connection point for a SLI bridge,yet as far as I can find out the only card in the 8000 series that's non-SLI is the 8400.

Doesn't it say 8600GT on the heatsink? Not that it matters, could have been switched....

Looks a lot like an 8500GT like here, but with a heatsink changed. Looks like he may have gotten a tad bit screwed.
 
8600 GT's are dual DVI, not DVI and VGA.

http://www.nvidia.com/object/geforce_family.html check out the reference spec's on the 8600's. No mention of VGA out like the 8500's.

As well the 8500's will SLI, they just don't need a bridge connector.

Can you read out the RAM chips and what the numbers are on them? 8500's use DDR2, not DDR3. http://www.nvidia.com/object/geforce_8500.html
 
Yep looks like they tried to screw him, report them or call them on it.

Yeah,the more I look,the more it looks like they altered a different card and passed it off as a 8600.The system itself sounds like a typical IBUYPOWER screw up,the hard drives were installed crooked,some screws came loose in shipping because they stripped the holes when they tightened them,and he's getting constant error messages.And that's just in the first couple of days.

the 8600gt or gts can have 512mb not that it makes any performance difference. The EVGA 8600gt 512mb comes with the same large cooler as the 8600gts. The cooler in that picture looks like the older 7600gt cooler which none of EVGA 8600gt cards have anyway.

some manufacturers do use dvi/vga instead of the usual dual dvi on the 8600. you can look on newegg and see for yourself.

Your cooler is a bit bigger but everything else lines up exactly (the memory chips, the capacitors) so they probably did some odd cooler/sticker swap.

that is NOT the 8500 cooler period. that cooler in the picture is the old 7600gt cooler.

i assume the system powers up right? then why not use rivatuner to find out what card that really is?

sounds like ibuypower is a shoddy bussiness though, if this is not a 8600GT, fight them on it

Who cares about the cooler.. I never said it was an 8500 cooler, I just meant look at the general size relative to the other cards they offer. That doesn't change the fact that the answer to his question is still that it's an 8500...

well the way you worded it in the beginning of your reply made it sound that way. anyway the pcb itself does look like the 8500 but the type of caps is different from the actual EVGA 8500gt picture.

But look at the capacitor and memory chip placements on the 8500's, then look at the OP's pic. It matches exactly with an 8500. I say see what the computer says, if it says 8500 your friend got ripped off.
 
The best way to know for sure would be to pop it in another PC, or his, and see what the drivers detect.

that is an 8500 no doubt with a rebadged cooler

call them on it, return your product, make noise, make a fuss about it. that is downright awful shady business....
