Im running X1800XT Crossfire and when i go into ati tool to overclock both it wont stay. Once i go into a game, it defaults. My temps are 35C-40C under load. I';m using liquid cooling by way. Anyone know why it wont keep my clock rates up??
 
This is new to me. However, ATI Tool has some known problems for certain. I was looking around on their forums lately and saw that the new ATI cards (in particular X1800) have seperate 2D and 3D settings, much like nVidia cards, but, the author of ATITool only has been able to adjust one so far. What I'm thinking is that when you switch back to 2D to check the temperatures and such, the card switches into 2D mode. If this is true, then I guess the best thing to do is to compare benchmarks both before and after changing settings in ATITool. This is just a guess mind you, but, it seems to fit.
 
Try using the overclocker.exe to set the clocks. Ati tool doesnt work correctly for overclocking on my x1800xl. I only use ati tool to set my voltages, and close it. Then overclocking with overclocker.exe, and closing it as well.

Are you running CCC in the background as well?
 
use ati tool 0.24, and or dont worry about Overclocking atm, ya got 2 x1800xt's, BE HAPPY, heh. :)
 
Humm weird. Yea i have CCC running in the background and wondered if that could be causing the problems. I activated OD and cant turn it off.

As for the cards. Oh im very happy. MY games run amazing, but if got the liquid cooling so might as well. =)
 
I currently have a single card, hoping to upgrade soon. I installed the drivers only, 5.13, no ccc. I also installed ati tools 0.25v11 beta. Any other version messes up my rig. I'm wondering if its a good idea to o/c now with stock coolers or upgrade cooling. Either way, couldn't be happier gaming.
 
I wouldn't void the warranty on those..........oc'ing $1,000 worth of stuff isn't a great idea in my opinion, i'm happy w/ my X850XTPE he he.
 
I've been ocing since my Geforce 2 GTS video card way back when. I've learned long ago that the only damage that occurs occurs through lack of appropriate caution. For example, on the surface it seems my CPU is being overclocked a fair bit from it's stock 200*11 to 252*10, a 320MHz oc (ok, kind of pitiful compared to most, but, I can't help that.) However, if you look a little deeper, you realize that really these chips are made for that sort of speed, and mine is among those that failed AMD's little tests where they run them on a cheap heatsink in a room that's at least ten degrees hotter than it's supposed to be until they dropped it down to what they classify as 3700+, then it passed. Once you give it non-elcheapo brand cooling, and if you don't run it in a small tin shack in the hottest day of summer, it basically IS the higher classified chip. Not literally so mind you, but, you get the idea, right? The main thing is you have to not overdo things that can be overdone. Some people push to the absolute utmost, thinking it's ok if Prime95 comes up with an error so long as nothing crashes often (and you'd be surprised, I can boot to Windows and run a few tasks at 2.7GHz, maybe even 2.8, but, Prime95 fails, so that means a few things should eventually crash.) Those people actually usually get their hardware to last a fair while though. Mind you, I want mine to last longer so don't push that hard, but, the point is that OCing isn't so bad as you make it out to be. I still have some hardware that I've overclocked in the past, such as my old Mobile Barton 2600+ which I had pushed up to 2.5GHz on air (possibly would have done more with a slightly better HSF and a motherboard that could go > 200MHz or bypass the mobile multiplier bug and set a higher than 12.5x multiplier. I've seen people get those to 2.7 on good air cooling.) My dad now uses it for an HTPC, and the only time it produced a flaw in Prime95 is when that stupid Lian Li case of his lets it run too hot (Lian Li may be good, and that case may be better than most HTPC style cases, but, I see flaws that even I could fix in the research phases and the fact remains that it runs hotter than my uber-cheap generic full tower with holes cut in it, and for it's cost, I would have expected more of the great Lian Li name.)

All that said, Hondaman, I don't see anyone getting much better results with upgraded cooling. The zalmans seem to improve idle, but, help very little to none with load temperatures. I think you will need to wait on the ATI Silencer 6 to come out to upgrade cooling. I suppose those cards have a fan as annoying as loud as ATI stuck on these? This stupid thing is so noisy I'd be tempted to replace it even if it didn't have my core temperatures shooting up and down so fast it can't be good for the thing long-term.
