I'm looking to do some analysis on the past 3 generations of video cards by Nvidia and ATI. Strictly looking at performance, and not price, I'd look at FPS benchmarking, heat production, and any unique features that the cards would have at the time. It'd consist of comparing the top of the line of each generation, which (if I'm not mistaken) is 480GTX vs 5870, 4970 vs 295GTX (were both of these multi-gpu? idk, have to look it up lol), and then I guess the 9800GT vs the 3850 (or 3870?)? I'm not even sure what ATI was doing when the 9800 was Nvidia's powerhouse video card, or was it ever even a powerhouse considering the 8800 was a beast.

I guess I'm not entirely sure which card to compare with for each company. There's an article for a 9800GTX only like 3 months before the review for the 280GTX, which seems weird. Can someone give me some light as to which card is close to the other in terms of Nvidia and ATI?

The trouble I'm having is making the search function cooperate. I'm either getting no results, which leads me to believe that my searches are failing miserably or there were no articles/benchmarks done for these cards (I doubt that). This is why I'm asking if anybody has links available then please help me out :)

Also I'm talking about strictly [H] articles and benchmarks. I'll be cross-comparing results from Anandtech and Tom's Hardware as well, then making a judgement on whether ATI or Nvidia has been the winner for the past few generations of video cards.

hd 5870 vs 480gtx
hd 4870 vs 285gtx
hd 3870 vs 9800gtx
Those are all correct, right? They're the highest single-gpu card for each generation if I'm not mistaken.

If anything, does anyone have suggestions as to which cards I should be stacking up against the other outside of any dual-GPU cards?
 
By generations it was:
Nvidia: 8xxx series vs. ATI 2xxx series
Nvidia: 9xxx series vs. ATI 3xxx series
Nvidia: 2xxx series vs. ATI 4xxx series
