Just curious, at one point in 2010 I went to put an old vid card and monitor in a closet, and realized it was full, so I went to a second closet, and it was full as well. Two closets full of PC parts, some of it dating back to the 286 era, all of it obsolete. I was wondering if anyone else has had a similar issue? You just kept putting of in a corner or closet or in storage and really have no earthly use for it, but have not sold, trashed, or given it away.

I usually put the stuff up, figuring to keep it as a backup until I am sure the new stuff replacing it proves reliable, and then maybe resell the parts later. Only issue was I seldom got around to selling the parts. I did some mental calculating and realize that all that crap was prolly close to $40K when new. I put it on Craigslist and sold as much as I could of it for around $1k total and threw the rest away. I was reminded of it when I was going through my Craigslist ads to delete the older ones.

Every few years I trash my spare stuff. I've also gotten better at giving away old stuff before it is worthless. I had a dual core toughbook that I was going to use as a car diag machine that wouldn't work with the odb scanner for some reason. Gave it to my brother to use as a notebook. Gave my stepfather my core 2 hp elite book that I had used as a linux test bed as it was better than his notebook and I had better ones(put windows 7 back on it and upgraded the ram). I've given away my spare monitors and whatnot as well.

Need to go through and throw a bunch of stuff away again.

If you can't sell the stuff, check around for local charities and electronics recyclers that can either refurb or properly dispose of old electronics. If your employer also does a periodic purge of electronics to a removal company, then ask them if they wouldn't mind you adding some stuff to their pile.
