It's only a few months away, and will show the power of the Conroe chip.

All the AMD fan boys screaming about crossfire setups that they can't afford, what happens when R600 comes out and one person with a 3800+ and one person with a conroe gets a 50-100 fps difference (Of course, you'd hafta buy the extreme edition, but whatever).

I'm gonna edit the post; I don't know how fast the R600 will be, or how much faster it will make Conroe, but if it can do bus speeds on Conroe faster then on an AMD...
 
I can't tell if your flaming amd or intel? Im assuming intel, but you got the amd fan boy part?
 
Not flaming anybody. I want to keep a balanced, non fanb0ish aspect on this... If Conroe can do so much higher bus speeds, then wouldn't the upcoming video cards that are coming in just a few months certainly show it's power?

Tghat of course would mean Conroe may not be the best buy at the moment, but when the R600 comes out... its going to smoke whatever is out... Unless MAD does have a secret too...
 
The whole Conroe thing is a flame on GPU's IHMO. GPU's are so far behind CPU speeds it's kind of sad and I'm making it a point to tell everyone I can.

Personally, I think its opposite of what you just said. I remember reading somewhere that a college research team ran the GPU as a CPU and did some processing on it and it performed remarkably well and outperformed some very expensive CPUs, as I think it was a 7800 or something.. dunno it was a long time ago. But anyway, GPU development has come a long way in the last few years and I think we are just now finally seeing some REAL development in the CPU sector..
 
GPUs are very powerful, but very purpose-specific. I would be astounded if they were able to run any current GPU as a general purpose CPU (i.e. run WindowsXP and a variety of applications on it) and get good performance.

The fact is, when it comes down to pure gaming performance you do not need the fastest CPU in the world. A X2 3800+ or PD 920 combined with a x1900xtx or 7950gtx will destroy any game out there at max settings on most any monitor. If you have something truly huge you will get far greater gains going Crossfire or SLi than upgrading the CPU.

However, computers aren't just, or even mainly for, gaming. When it comes to anything other than games, such as encoding work, video editing, photoshop, 3D rendering, folding, compiling, etc, the CPU power is where it counts. It is very short sighted to judge a CPU only or mainly on its gaming performance.
 
I don't know. I hear that DX 10 take a lot of lead of the CPU, so maybe not? Hopefully that will be good for physics.

I have to say I'm a tad tired of this sudden, "Look how important CPUs are and Kyle's a fan boy" thing. If it were really legit all of it would have occurred when the original article came out. My rant sort addressing this but it's more of a frustration at people trying to undermine Kyle's articles and make him look like a !!!!!!.

Remember, GPUs aren't necessarily behind so much as they simply have way more work to do. GPUs are actually more advanced, but their work load goes up much faster than the CPU's does.
