They contacted me this morning, having discovered my resume online, and want me to come in to talk about some positions.

Now, I just drove two hours to meet with a place called JL Kirk and Associates, and it turned out to be a complete scam. Called themselves "career path specialists". Wanted to help me craft my resume (that I had already worked on for the last few years) and to hone my intervieweing skills, but find a job for me? Oh, well, that seemed a bit too high for them to shoot.

This Tek Systems place seems more like a real deal. I wondered if anyone had any experience with them.

tek systems is a sweat shop. i hate them with a passion. i was so professional with them and for them to treat me the way they did, Ill deter anyone from them. If i seam upset with them , it's because they treated me terrible.

I know a couple of people who work there and would confirm that statement. I use them as a head hunter when I am looking for a perminiate position.

But speaking of them... Has anyone heard about Robert Half I would bet they are the same deal.

if your looking for a specific job, be very wary. its possible they might lead you in a direction you dont want.

Could someone elaborate on that? Did they take a huge commission? Penalize you for sick days? What was the terrible treatment?

In my recent job search, I had dealings with both Tek Systems and Robert Half Technology. I went in, took their stupid tests, and they told me "Your one of highest scoring people." Then they gave me the run around. Kept giving promises of up coming positions all to no resolve. Robert Half did offer me one position, but it was about 15k less than the market value for the position in my area. Their customer was probably paying market value for the position. Robert Half was then taking their cut. That's how they make money.

My suggestion: jump through their hoops a little bit for the slight change you might get something from them, but don't rely on them. You will most likely make more money accepting a position the "traditional" method.

If a recruiting company contacts you and they DEFINATELY have a position they want to interview you for, then I'd say go for it. If they just say they have a "few positions", make them tell you what positions they are... a few recruiting companies I've come across just want to add you to their database (ie - Robert Half Technologies - what a total waste of my leave).

Although I've worked for Spherion in the past, I don't really have anything bad or good to say about them. I did the job to make them happy, and they kept paying me. However, they treated a lot of my colleagues like shit.

In the end I was contacted by a small recruiting company (they really seemed to care), but Spherion offered me a new position when I gave them an ultimatum... but the company that was going through the small recruiting company wanted me with them, so they just ended up forgetting about them and contacting me directly (I don't know about the legalities of what they did, but I won't mention any names either) :D

i was told that i would be doing very basic usr account stuff, like passwords set up an account for vpn. when i got there, i was a full blown security admin for a HUGE company on all contents. i was getting paid 12 bucks an hour. when i aporoached tek systems about what i was hired on to do and what i was actually doing, and wanted to re nogotiate my terms, they stalled and wanted not to talk to me. it was a terrible joke. i was working so damn hard and was getting ripped off. the people i worked with were great. so one day i was called after work and they told me that was my last day working and that tek wanted to cut its ties. i went to pick up my stuff at tek and they brought me in a room with a box of my stuff, and walked out. i was sitting there with no explanation of my termanation and a box of my stuff. i asumed that it was ok to go home!!!! i cant tell you how pissed i was at the way i was treated.

Im glad you guys are bringing these things to light. I had went through a small local staffing place for a little while and was not amused. Perhaps hearing your stories will discourage others from dealing with these kind of places. The sad part is that half of the job postings online are for places like this.

Also, I contacted a place which portrayed itself as a headhunting company which was looking to fill a lot of direct to hire positions. When i got there they wanted to sell me 20k worth of cert bootcamps.

lol, oh man that's horrible.

I had heard similar stories from a friend who went through manpower for maintenance and factory jobs. This is very appreciated, guys. Did give me a bit of hope, since I've been on the job hunt since college for a month and a half now. However, I'd rather wait around for a position offered independently.

Many thanks!
