I've noticed since I got my E6600 in that for gaming etc... it's been great... it also runs very cool 20 degrees C under normal load. Although when I pop out into windowed mode while running a game such as DDO it's like someone threw a wrench in the gears transition to other apps is slow even freezish, and web surfing is sluggish. My Laptop has an AMD Duo Core 4400+ and I never experenced these issues.... I could be using bit comet converting with PSP 9, surfing the web and windowed in game and nothing ran particularly sluggish. I won't go into a major battle in game, but I could cruise around shops and town without issues. Here's the specs of the rest of my system if that sheds any insight.

Processor E6600
MB: Gigabyte GA-945GM-S2
RAM: PQI DII667 PQI25400-2GDB
HDD: WD 150gig Raptor + 500 gig Maxtor
VC: Connect 3d X1900 XT 512
PSU: Antec 600w

BTW: Steps already taken:

Updated to newest firmware/bios for MB
Fully Updated Windows
Defrag HDD
Installed newest VC Drivers

Thats the core of the system let me know if you need any additional info.

is your page file allocation enough ? usually this is what will happen if it is low .

LOL I don't believe that for a minute, any proof?

Strangely I'll have to agree with you that there seems to be something about Conroe that I'm not quite understanding. Like you said Super Pi and graphic runs great but as far as daily or real world difference there is little if any that is noticable. This is coming from a first time dual core user and also previous AMD. But I notice my dvdshrink time for example wasnt any faster than my FX-55. It's weird because clock for clock it's suppose to be faster which it's in graphic and pi run but as far as real world usage is it? I just have a weird feeling as if Conroe was design JUST to be better at Pi run and faster benchmark. I know it's crazy talk but that's just the vibe I'm getting. Also there is a massive lag about 30-60 sec when my desktop shows and I cant run anything until the hourglass goes away; never was an issue with my previous system. Weird..

Since room temperature is around 25C, and normal case temp is 35C, I doubt that reading is accurate.

Never know somones room temp and case temp ;) my room temp is 18 and case temp 18. Used to be about 20 room 15 case. Big fans and or AC are nice. Either way though, motherboards are horribly off on their readings usually.

Well chances are MB is just prob off... checked bios and said it was 19 degress with CPU fan running @ 556 rpm. I have AC running @ about 65 F degrees I prob have mine a bit cooler than most always liked a bit of a chill in the air. I'm running standard never saw a need to overclock. I'm not a benchmark junky. As for my page file how do I adjust that???

right click my computer
click properties/advanced/performance settings/advanced/change/

click on custom size, set it for your boot drive about 1500mb initial and 1500mb maximum.
this will prevent alot of the fragging that happens to the swap file. you may have to reboot. everybody has their own formula for the size it should be, but any amount between 500 - 2000 is good. if you have 2gb ram, 1500 will be good.
you should do this after any clean install from now on. but i dont think this is what your problem is. do you have lots of stuff running in the background? are you sure both cores are operating?
ctrl-alt-del
click performance.is the graph split into 2 sections?
with no apps running, this should be 5% or less. if you have good anti virus, it should be 2% or less.

Is this really true? I thought these new dual cores were supposed to take almost anything you could throw at them, especially everyday apps...can somone comment on this because I'm very close to getting one and I don't want to make any mistakes.

i can run f.e.a.r. combat on one core, and on the other core recode a divx movie to mpg, or transcode a movie, or stream a movie to the xbox360 without the slightest hesitiation in either program. and can probably run several other apps with them. so yea, you should notice a difference between sc and dually. if you dl and install winlauncher, you can set affinity for all your apps, that is assign which core they will be run on every time you fire them up.

This thread makes me a little nervous. I just bought a E6300 system that should be here wednesday or thursday from newegg. I will be going from socket a to conroe:) I hope I notice a huge difference.

I have the same issues, sort of. I have an E6600 w/. 1900xt and when I run a game and alt-tab out, my scrolling in IE is very choppy. I suspect its the ATI driver not playing well.

My guess is the motherboard. Your on a 945 chipset which is very slow. 965 chipsets are also very slow compared to 975. Hopefully RD600 will fix this as it's faster than 975.

Well I tried the page allocation and I did see a bit of pick up but meh... not much... As for background programs I'm running very little Norton 2006, Gmail mail notifier, G15 keyboard app. Nothing that's going to eat alot of memory or CPU time. I have to say atm I'm pretty unimpressed. with my Duo Core AMD 4400+ I didn't have to jump through any hoops and apps were "snappy". I haven't owned a Intel chip for a while so maybe ppl are use to having to take these steps and I definately am not. It could be that the 945 board I'm using even though it states is Core 2 friendly may not be. Unfortunately my case only accepts mATX boards and if you pop over to SFF forums you'll see how limited the selection is atm. I might be the acception here who knows maybe I have a bad board or chip here??? Anyone have a link to some dignostic tools possibly? Or maybe I just got snagged by the PR and was expecting more than what I got with the Real World performance being less that remarkable. I had become very use to running 3-4 apps at a time with little noticeable interferance while surfing or watching a Clip. ATM I can hardly run 2-3 apps without noticable slow down in transition and even just web page loading and I know it's not my connection for all I need to do is pop on my old computer and it's like it's always been.

Gotta say, I'm just not seeing this sluggish behavior.

I fired up BF2 with all the settings on high and alt-tabbed out and started surfing...

Fired up firefox, IE, and went out to apple's website and started watching the 720p version of a trailer. No change in browsing speed... Multitabbed in FF and downloading in IE....

In non-overclocking scenarios, 965 is a little slower than 975, but I wouldn't say "very slow".

Like I said it might just be me :( Are u useing a 945 board though? I've also noticed that it seems to be more of an issue with network based apps. For example if I've got bitcomet running and try to surf Firefox is horridly slow. Take off Bitcomet back to "snappy" performance... Launch DDO in windowed mode... minimize it and comp semi-freezes for 20 secs again surfing is sluggish.. I'm running same version of bitcomet on other computer and don't have this issue, running DDO on other computer once again no issue... so maybe its the MB not processor... unsure here...

I was installing 2 games, decrypting / updating my entire Steam setup, running AV in the background, listening to music and playing COD 2 all settings maxed out 1680x1050 the other night, could alt-tab in and out with no hesitation at all.

Something has gotta be wrong with your setup I'd say

Is that a new install of Windows with the new system or just sysprep?

Did you install motherboard / chipset drivers ? <-- could be your problem!

It should have been:
Installed Windows
Installed chipset drivers
installed other drivers
updated windows

I had a problem when I installed, I used an old version of ZoneAlarm & it nearly borked my whole system (it wouldnt even load windows), had to boot in to safe mode, uninstall it, and then download a newer version. And that one program (ZA) felt like it added a few seconds to the boot time by itself.

another thing that should hopefully fix a few more things is something like tuneup utilities 2006 , this program works wonders and it will even help you disable startup programs( alternatively use msconfig in the run box) , clean up registry , free up system resources , if its sorts all this out you should be ok.

running drwatson usually gives you the hardware diagnostics , but i doubt its that .

Something in the resources dept seems wrong. Troubleshooting from here is a longshot though. Break it down and make sure you understand that its provided with enough resources to multitask fast enough. If you have dedicated half your memory to other stuff then dont expect it to do a lot for you , disable things you dont need to run in the background.

Also go to task manager and see if there isnt other things hogging up your cpu and memory.

It's just you.

I can throw anything at these C2D's and there's no slowdown.

A huge improvement from my X2 machines, which were heavily overclocked.

There's issue(s) on your end.

really you notice a difference?

are you referring to benchmarks when you say a difference or other things?

have you changed anything in your BIOS which will have disabled some features of the cpu?

have you tried all the things i told you like changing startup and freeing up resources.

Resources plays a great role for multitasking, also is your cpu running at what its suppose to be running at?

Im running on the 965 Chipset, and honestly - I do not experience any type of sluggish performance. The system is smokign fast at 3.4Ghz, and even at 2.13Ghz, it was hella fast.

Multitasking, Burning DVDs, Playing Music, Surfing the Web, and playing EQ2 - all at once -- not a hitch.

Specs in SIG.

I noticed this same problem myself and I have an ATI video card. I'm seeing a trend here of people saying this never happens to them who all have nVidia video cards. I have 2GB ram for one so heavy paging is a non issue for me. I'm also pretty sure I've seen this even after turning my page file off entirely.

Also, when I alt-tab out of my full screen game I get a hard pause in the system of 2 or 3 seconds before I can do anything: VERY annoying.

I've heard that nVidia video drivers are far superior to ATI. If I knew for a fact that these issues would go away with an nVidia video card I might buy one just for that reason alone.

Could anyone comment on this? I just ordered a x1900xtx and I'm building myself an e6600...I'd really hate to get sluggish performance. Any other ATI users out there who can confirm or deny this?

Not a problem here and I ran my X1900XTX single before going crossfire, I just sold 2-7900GTX 512MB cards as they did not set my world on fire, the games I play improved with crossfire, quake4, Fear, Oblivian.

Note: If your worried about the P5W DH then go for the Abit AW9D Max that will be out this Friday.

Is there a reason I should be worried about the P5w DH?

Is that a new install of Windows with the new system or just sysprep?

This is fresh install... I've already done everything that you listed.

As for Overclocking... messing with BIOS settings etc... Haven't even considered going down that road yet... So unless the default settings have done somthing crazy I doubt the blame lay down that road.

As for programs eating up system resources I doubt it. I have very little installed and I haven't surfed enough stuff on the net to have picked up much spyware,ad-ware etc... This sucker should be a beast not some Celron getting choked to death.

As for BIO's I've flashed to most current. Gone thru bios set-up and could identify anything that looked suspicious. ATM MB seems most likely the criminal in this investigation. As for the ATI thing I've also heard from for several gamer sources that they have experienced the 2-10 second freeze when poping out of Full Gaming Mode back to Desktop with ATI cards. Many believe that ATI cards have rough time switching back and forth between 3D to 2D modes rapidly?

ATI cards don't have a rough time switching, it's because ATI cards are clocked down in 2D mode to prevent overheating and excessive fan noise. The 2D speed (desktop) is lower than the 3D speed (game) and therefore it takes a second or two to downclock the card and adjust the driver. That's really all it is.

no problems here and a lot faster compare to a toledo x2 at 2800 when playing civilizations 4 while decoding and alt tab to check emails etc...
