I just don't feel like I got everything when installing new vid card drivers. i usually format when i do driver updates. i'm guessing i'm being a little to paranoid about it eh?

and yes i use driver cleaner with these steps:

1. Unplug nic card or modem from net or disconnect
2. Remove nvidia from add/remove programs
3. Reboot into safe mode (F8 during boot up)
4. On reboot into safe mode WinXP SP1/SP2 will auto detect and install drivers. Just let it do its thing. If you can cancel out of the auto install hardware wizard then skip the rest and run Driver Cleaner! If you can NOT cancel out of auto detect wizard then...
5. Navigate to device manager->display adapters->highlight nVidia and click uninstall or remove but don't reboot
6. Disable any AntiVirus Software (If you don't disable is than it could give trouble)
7. Run Cab Cleaner (not needed, but recommended)
8. Run Driver Cleaner
9. Empty recycle bin and reboot
10. Install the new drivers

i just don't feel "clean" unless i format. am i worrying to much?

Um..no. I just upgraded from 71.84 to 76.50 and just ran the setup program. The drivers installed without a problem. When I downgrade (or have problems with the upgrade)I use Driver Cleaner.

I haven't formatted in years and do frequent driver updates on my vid card.
Everything runs fine here.

This is something I've always been unsure of myself. I've always been of the mindset that you download the driver first, uninstall the old one and go into the display settings and set to Standard VGA. Then, re-boot and install the new one.

In days of old, I had just installed the new driver right over the old one, but it seems like conflicts would be present. Maybe as a result of remnants of the old driver still being present in the registry or whatever. Like I said, this was a long time ago and maybe ATi and nVidia have updated their drivers to wipe out, completely, the old driver .dll's and what not. Dunno!

Hell, I'm still running a GeForce 4 Ti4600 on an AthlonXP 2100+, so we're not talking "bleeding edge" here. However, once the Venice cores come out, watch out..............wallet!! :D

Speaking of drivers, who has more friendly driver utilities, ATi or nVidia? I still can't decide on whether or not to get an X800XL or a 6800GT.

control panel Add/ remove
remove drivers
boot to safe mode
cancel "new video card found"
run driver cleaner 3
reboot
cancel "new video card found"
run new drivers
use your favorite OvClk Prog(coolbits)

No need to format,Driver cleaner took all of the nasties away
If you still feel unclean run the cab cleaner and
if you still feel impure dissable system restore, defrag and reset restore
Now in oerder to break yourself from this obsession+
you are not to shower for three days

I usually just:

1. install new drivers (no uninstalling of old drivers, but some driver sets uninstalled the old drivers)
2. install coolbits again if it's an nvidia card

out of dozens of drivers, i've only had to run driver cleaner 2 or 3 times because new drivers wouldn't install or wouldn't install correctly.
