If so, please inform me. I would be interested in participating..that is if we are all still around. lol. ? They say they have 100,000 cpu's to process the data, im sure they could use more! ; )

Im sure most of you know about this hugh scientific milestone occuring on 09/10/08, but for those that dont...

None that I know fold for LHC@Home. It would be interesting but the [H]orde is more aimed at medical-related research. If you wish, you can gather the infos about this and post here. I'm sure there might be a few which want to participate in a big scientific milestone :)

Whoa  Now I'm really in a "tail spin", would somebody please post just what this LHC@Home is

If it's anything like lookin' for ET in space I think I'll pass. I want to be on the team that helps mankind right here on earth, because IMHO we've got enough problems right here on earth without looking out into space to try and take on any problems than "little green men" have.

In passing, I've read and heard some exciting and good things about the CERN deal. Unfortunately I really don't know much about what a " Large Hadron Collider" is or what it does. :( I looked at that link that Tigerbiten provided and it looks like "borger heaven" to me. (IMO we gots to find out how to get permission and "borg" the hell outa' that joint :p)

Remember, like lots of people, my generation is pretty much "low tech" ;)

DC ONWARD

LHC@home is a volunteer computing program which enables you to contribute idle time on your computer to help physicists develop and exploit particle accelerators, such as CERN's Large Hadron Collider
In laymens terms, its doing simulations to help build bigger and bigger atom smashers.

Theres more info on the Large Hadron Collider here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Large_Hadron_Collider

Cure for cancer >>> creating black holes imo.

I lose faith and trust in humanity every second, especially on such comments.

You can't truely believe that? Can you? Well, wait, Im sorry, you can, and so many others do.

Thats why its very sad. Very.

Which is why I hope upon hopes that your joking..

It is quite apparent that you have no idea what information and truths could be gleaned from these experiements..

It's kind of a running joke to those in the know. Why so serious?

Im glad it was a joke, and I was serious because its difficult to judge through text when someone is joking or being sarcastic...

I don't blame you. With all the ignorant bullshit that has been circulating in the past few weeks helped along by the American media who is more concerned with ratings than the harm they are doing to the American public its hard not to be annoyed.

This is the Distributed Computing section, participants in all projects are welcome. But as you may have already gathered, most of us here choose to participate in medical related projects, such as F@H or WCG. However, I'm always interested in learning about new projects, what they are hoping to accomplish, and what positive results that have come from them. And I would doubt that I'm the only one.

Even if that project is going to supposedly destroy the world in four years or so? <-- (sarcasm)

Definitely want to read that link when I get home tonight, thanks!

I don't work for the "American media"

Nor will I ever.

Though I will accept your blame, if it helps you sleep at night, or even if it doesn't.

Huh? Monocle Cat was agreeing with you.

I'm sticking with the medical F@H.

I love the LHC but what my sister and other family members have gone through should not be sufferd by another generation.

It's great we have a team and for thoes that don't want to run the CPU F@H clients go for broke with this.

500 something place. That is not Hard.

And as long as you have corrupt pharmaceutical companies, you wont see a cure for cancer anytime soon, just like a cure for AID's wont be found and the few ones that have come close, suddenly disappear.

besides, once cancer is cured, what do you think will take it's place? something meaner, AID's will become the new cancer while AID's is replaced by something 10x as worse as AID's was, thank you virus world!

Its not what society's priorities should be...

Getting off this planet and expanding is.

Course, don't listen to me, Im just crazy..

Awesome, when can we have a kool aide party?

or that silly dancing banna... thing...

I hate pharmaceutical company practices. Why spend money on research when you can buy advertising to sell more Viagra!

All you people saying this stuff (LHC) isn't important to health issues should sit down and think about how particle physics brought us MRI's, CAT scans and all sorts of other really cool medical technology.

mmmm hmmmmmm

Welp, I just finished a couple of articles about the "Large Hadron Collider". I came to the conclusion that I have absolutely no interest in "roughin' up molecules" or even callin' em' bad words. I don't care whether it's with a large, a medium or a small Hadron Collider. I'm just gonna' stick with DC programs like F@H or WCG and let somebody else beat on molecules. :D Hey, maybe we can get the fanatic Muslims in Iraq to beat on molecules and stop killin' everyone. We'll just tell em' that Mr. Hadron is gonna' get their 9 virgins first and screw up their eternal reward for killin' anyone that doesn't agree with them.

DC'n FOR THE CURE

We would join but before that, we had to ask this :

Can it fold ?

To understand why we fold you must read some of relic's poems.

Then you might better understand.

(that and if you have had a loved one die of cancer or suffer from chrones)

or if you yourself or one of your children has suffered cancer (as I have on both counts).

Now that it seems F@H is going to get back into "real" research (I do understand they need to make sure things work as expected), I'm going to get back into it again. I've got two Q6600's, an 8500GT, a 9600GT about to be back online. Also have a Q9550 and a GTX260 coming that will be folding asap.

LHC@Home however, just isn't my thing. I'm sure many people will contribute to their project though, just as many contribute to SETI (as pointless as it seems to have become), and WCG.

I guess until I started reading some of those wikis that I didnt realize that there were so many DC projects out there. We should find a small DC project and just support it for like a week or so. It would be nice to give a huge boost to a small DC project. Maybe those of us running more than one DC box could just put one box on a smal project for a week. PLus it would be cool to be the #1 team for some random project in under a week! :)

The best part is most of the DC projects out there run through BOINC so theres no other software to install, just attach another project to your client.

Also on the topic, the DC vault shows how teams do in everything. We actually have more presence in other projects than you'd think initially. After I found all our various teams and talked to the DC-Vault admin to get all our teams into the database we're up to #116 overall:

BOINC is great. Attatch and go, thats it. I ran Rosetta@home for a while before I made my way here and back into folding.

Thanks for that link Alan. Thats a pretty sweet page. We should put some power towards one of the other projects and give one of our other teams a boost for a set period of time. Kinda like what we did with the Chimp Challenge only for another DC project. Just for 7 - 10 days. It would be a nice boost for a small DC effort. I like helping the little guys every once in a while. :)

There is a team representing the [H] but only ranked #513. 6 total members, 4 active:

Thanks, thats exactly what i was looking for! Im still going to f@h on my main rig of course, but if i find a few cpu cycles i can toss that way i think i will.

To address some of the other comments...

Is it more important than curing cancer? Hell no, but imho it is equal. It will, in theory, and givin enough time to process, contribute greatly to humanity in many ways that we will be able to use to improve our lives, medically, technically, scientifically, you name it, including some shit right out of sci-fi: other dimentions/time travel, black holes, dark matter, higgs boson/God Particle...?

Honestly, I was a bit concerned with the whole thing at first. Ok, not at first...but once i started researching and had to weed through all the hyped "doomsday" sites and found legit info, I came to the conclusion that NO ONE could say they were 100% certain that nothing terrible could/would happen to billions of people. <---Um, does that include me??

That left me wondering why they would risk thier own existance (as well as all of humanity) on an experiment? I mean I know that risks must be taken to progress as a civilization. Look at Neil Armstrong. What he and his crew risked to get to the moon was fricking awesome. Had i been alive i would have been cheering at the, uh, radio? like no tomorrow. But that was a few people that chose to risk thier lives for progress, where as we dont have any choice in this matter (or did i miss the memo?). :/

The point of this is that I understand that we need to evolve, and occationally that will require risks.

As a end to this rant, someone asked what "good" can come from this project? Well, for starters, the internet as we now know it, was created so that scientists could brainstorm on this project. Im not sure exactly how it got turned over to John Q. Public, but once we had it BAM! And the internet was just a side project of LHC that they built as a tool. If the internet was just a "tool" they created to assist in making something much bigger and better for everyone, well then im on board.

I dont plan on ever folding for SETI, because I do feel i need to work towards something that can affect me in this lifetime and i dont believe we will find alien life until we evolve further up the chain.

edit: alan2308 - thats an awesome link! Thanks man!!

Dan Simmons has a book series that the earth is swallowed by a black hole, made in a system very much like that LHC.

I don't think it would happen.

But if it did, instant death or slow world caving in on itself and we all run around like idiots?

I would perfer to go without notice i think. Life as we know it would not exist once "the word" got out...chaos would ensue and spending my last few hours armed in a safe room doesn't sound very fun. Now, If I was the ONLY one who knew and had a few weeks, well that would be a whole 'nother story! ;)
