Anyone bought 2001FP recently?

I'm thinkin of buying this monitor.. i know it used be very popular year ago, but is it a good monitor? does it have PVA panel?

I'm replacing Hyundai L90D+ cos colors are so washed and its very hard on eyes, and i definately don't want same problem with the replacement. I read that 1905FP doesn't use Samsung panel anymore, http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=889901 is it same case with 2001FP?

I also heard 2001FP has some with light leakage and dead pixel.. is that true?

The 2001FP uses an IPS panel. Also, there is no rule that says certain monitors will have dead pixels. You may get them or you may get a perfect dead pixel free display. Most LCDs will have some backlight leakage but yeah, Dell monitors are more likely to have it than other companies it seems. You get what you pay for.

Stop spouting off bullshit you can't back up. The only Dell screen that has a lot of backlighting problems is the 2005FPW, but backlighting is a problem with the panel and Dell doesn't make any of the panels.

How many 2405 FPW owners do you see complaining about backlighting?

I returned two 2001fps within the last month....mostly cause it was hard on my eyes. Can't compare with other LCDs cause it was the only one I tried. Maybe LCDs aren't for me....I ended up with a NEC 22" CRT and am very happy with it. Dead pixels=0. Backlighting=minor on the left edge. Shouldn't be an issue. Colors are very vibrant....very good and not washed out. If it weren't for the eye issue I would have kept it.

Might have been the infamous screendoor effect - very hard on the eyes. I sent my 2001fp back within a couple of days.

I got a 2001FP when they were on sale just a few weeks ago. It has all the characteristics of an IPS panel, (e.g. black pixels are purple-ish when viewed from the side) so I'm pretty sure they're still using the same LG.Philips LM201U04 panel. I don't see any screen door or backlighting problems, and mine has zero dead pixels.

First one had a dead red pixel right in the middle. Sent me a new one this week and it had a dead green pixel off to the side so I kept it. Slight backlighting, but I expect that with LCD's. Not noticable really unless you're running DOS.

But I did just get the NEC FE2111 CRT for gaming. For me the 2001FP was way too blurry for BF1942 (fps) gaming. But the text and colors were great so I kept it for a little dual monitor action for programming. For text, putting the 2001FP in portrait (swivel'ing it) mode is really nice. For the $500 I got it for it was worth it.

I can't back it up? Go to any hardware forum on the net and you'll see people complaining about backlight leakage and more than 70% of the time it's about Dell monitors. Both Dell 2001FP and 2005FPW that I've seen at work had major backlight leakage in the lower left corner. Also, backlight leakage is NOT a problem with the panel. It's an assembly issue.

You are aware that most of the time people complain in forums then not...

I just got one last week. I had been a little concerned over the backlight leakage and pixel response issue I'd read about.

No dead pixels on mine. It is quite bright, as people have noted. There is some backlight bleeding in a dark room, but it's not at all noticeable during use -- I have to display a dark image in a dark room before it becomes apparent. Pixel response is completely adequate, no issues with WoW or, to my surprise, CS:S.

So given that my expectations were a little lowered, I'm extremely happy with the 2001FP I got.

I considered getting the 2005FPW, but here's how I decided on the 2001FP:

2005FPW > 2001FP:

  • Better pixel response time. [In practice, this turned out not to be an issue.]
  • 5% wider.

2001FP > 2005FPW
  • 8% more pixels for the same cost [at the time I bought].
  • Fewer backlight problems reported.
  • 14% taller.

I do not list the wide aspect ratio as an advantage for the 2005FPW since it comes at a cost of a reduced vertical dimension, and most OS desktops and many games have UI components laid out in bars across the bottom of the screen which eat vertical area. In my opinion the 5% advantage that the 2005FPW has in width is almost unnoticeable while the 14% height advantage enjoyed by the 2001FP is more obvious. Aside from the specified pixel response times, it's almost like the 2005FPW is a 2001FP with the bottom chopped off.

Basically, the 2005FPW seems too small vertically, and to me the only widescreens worth considering are the 2405FPW-sized ones (1920x1200).

You mileage may vary.

Yes, but I've seen more complains about Dell LCDs than all other companies combined. I am not saying all Dell monitors suck. But there is clearly a bigger chance of having backlight problems with Dell monitors than other monitors that use the same panel. Have you seen the Apple 20" Cinema display? No backlight leakage whatsoever, and it uses the same panel as the 2005FPW. Again, I'm not saying there aren't 2005FPWs that have no problems with it but with Dell it seems the problem is much more common. They are cheaper than the rest for a reason IMO. They are still the best bang for the buck though.

True, but dells LCD are very popular to buy for the cost/performance factor. I believe at lest here at HardOCP you will find that most people have Dell LCD's then others. with this you will see a higher cross section of complaints with Dell LCDs to others...

I also agree that Dell LCDs are not the best you can buy, but they do offer a very good LCD for the price. There are better LCD you can buy, but you will pay for that as well. I think comparing an Apple to a Dell LCD is not a good compare, IMO Apple LCDs are far more superior then Dells, but Apple LCDs cost tons more as well.

You really need to look at other LCDs that are in the same "Class" and not compare a higher-end LCD to a mid level LCD.

I really didnt wanna jump into the fray here but i hate it when people defend Dell. Dell does not make anything. They license and or contract out what they want and have it built. The only thing Dell does well is customer service. Without a doubt they have the cheesiest frankenstien machines there are. Top of the line CPU with mediocre motherboards and complete crap ram and questionable PSU. ( Feel free to rearrange the order in the last sentence depending on the month) Or the ever popular super fast Note book that nobody and i mean nobody can seem to keep working consistently for more then two weeks.

And ya i know from which i speak, i repair the peices of crap all the time. Thats why i tell all the folks at work and anyone who will listen that unless they want the drop warranty for the notebooks, DONT buy Dell. Give me half of what you were going to spend at Dell and ill assemble a PC for you that as good mabey better.

I would rather spend 100 bucks + over the price of the Dell monitors and get better controller hardware in my monitor since there only like 3 panel manufacturers out there anyways. Same panel's better hardware = superior everything else i.e Apple 23 inch versus Benq 23 inch vs HP 23 inch wide screens.

(I dont fix monitors though but i have had had peeps bring them to me)

I'm not a dell fan-boy... however, i do not have an inherent bias towards them as you do. Benq assembles the Dell screens. And paying $100 more is certainly an underexaggeration. 24" Dell = $850US. 24" anything else = > 1200. Big difference.

Sorry i should have clarified myself a little better. 100 + is just a way of saying paying more so ill say it properly. I would pay more money for a competitors monitor rather then buy a Dell. I would save an extra pay check and suffer with a 15 inch rather then constantly send it back for warranty or worse get one fubar out of the box. You get what you pay for and ill pay for the 18 % better piece of mind thank you. Oh and i am not really a fan of Benq either, even though they broke the speed barriers before most other companys.

But you know what? I should really back up someone else here who said it depends on what your use is. Gaming only and not really caring about image quality then ya, buy Megavision or what have you but if you want to use it for anything else besides that then move it on up like george and weezy.

WHat a load of BS. With all due respect, everything breaks. Sony laptops have a bad reputation on forums and yet they are pretty good. Same thing goes for Dell - if it's so bad, how come they sell more puters than any1 else in the industry? Service u say, well, HP/Compaq. IBM and others have pretty good service too. QUality-wise, I can't believe that Dell would be selling crap. Yes, their gaming machines suck, but if there's anything Dell can offer, it's stability. U buy a business computer/laptop, it's virtually indestructable. I had one for years, and it experienced loads of abuse and it's still running. Same goes for a couple of laptops I owned. Just because some Dell stuff breaks it doesn't mean that EVERYTHING Dell makes is crap. They cut the corners, but they also know better than to sell sub-standard equipment - I'm pretty sure they DONT want to lose the leading position.

I've had my for a few months now and love it! It came with noe dead pixel and no screen door effect. It does have alil of back light leakage on the left bottom conner but its so small that I dont even notice its there. In games I dont see ghosting at all colors look bright and rich. I would not go back to a crt after using a lcd plus I got some desktop space back and its great for lan partys easy to lift.

I've had mine not quite a month. It replaced a 1900FP. My first had a dead red pixel off to the left side, phoned for a replacement and had one in 24hrs. It has a dead pixel to the left that only shows up on black screens and is hardly noticeable. I'm keeping it, have played FPS's on it w/ no ghosting on a EVGA 6800GT in DVI mode. No screen door effect, a little backlighting, but it doesn't bother me a bit. I personally like the brightness, that's why I wanted an LCD.

I've had a 2001Fp for almost a year, and I love it. I don't have any of these little problems people are griping about. I.E. Dead pixels, screen door effect, backlight leakage.

The 2001fp is the best bang for the buck. I recommend them to all my customers that want an awesome LCD for a great price.

I own a 2001fp and a inspiron d600, and love both. No real issues on either, except a little line where the keyboard of the d600 scratched the lcd of the notebook. However, both were cheap, and both work after a year with no issues. It's possible that I am just ridiculously lucky, but I'll keep using Dell products until my luck runs out.

I made a thread about my own experiences with the 2001FP Here . I should mention that I did end up returning it, and it took 2 full months to be refunded,

As far as refunds go, it's a general problem with Dell, not just its monitors. It doesn't mean though that's the monitor's fault in any way ;)

My personal opinion, is it is an excellent LCD, no matter who actually makes it, you get what you pay for. It beat the snot out of my Sony E-540B Trinitron, and I was hardcore CRT. But my friend got a 2001fp and after seeing it, and using it for quite a while I decided to buy it. I won't look back.

Kept mine though for coding (text is much sharper). Got a NEC FE2111 for gaming. It's much better (text sucks though IMHO). For BF42 the 2001FP made close combat unbeareable.

So what's you BF1942 nickname? ;)

Just wondering if we've pawned each other recently. :)

Just goes to show how we all see differently.....I think the NEC FE2111 (I bought mine last week) is outstanding with text. Of course, it's outstanding with games also. Maybe its the resolution I'm running.....1280X960.

I'm running at 1600x1200. Since I have the 2001FP in dual mode nex to it, text just always wants to be displayed on the LCD. But when I crank the resolution down a little on the NEC, text is much clearer.

I read that in most of the reviews on the NEC.

Since I got it just for gaming it's ok. In hindsight I think I would've like to have tried the IBM. Don't get me wrong, I do like it. Style is good, and it doesn't get way too hot.

Any CRT next to an LCD isn't gonna look great text wise for me anyway. Oh well.

And I'll assume that you're going to support these PCs that you build for people? Personally, I'd want anyone who I gave money to to be able to spell correctly and speak coherently. (What kind of "Note book" could YOU build?)

Even though I'm a builder at heart, I'm not totally adverse to vendors, so out of curiousity, let me ask:

3.4 Ghz P4 550
1 GB DDR2 533
160GB SATA
PCI-E GF 6800 NU
16x DVD+-RW
Audigy 2 ZS
17" 12ms LCD
4 year warranty

I paid <$900 for that. So, what could you do with $450? ;)

I hate spelling Nazis. But if you are going to be one it is best to make sure that your spelling is correct to avoid looking like the fool. You spelled curiosity wrong. And you repeated the word "to."

Recently bought a dell 2001fp. The problem is that i can not get the monitor to display at 1600X1200 with 32bit color, but im able to get 16 bit color with the same resolution. Whenever i go to the display settings and try to click on the 32 bit color it reverts to 1600X1024. I have a geforce 3 with the 61.77 drivers, any help would be much appreciated

alex

Hmm, I'm having no troubles with 1600x1200 and 32-bit color with my 9800pro. It could be drivers, I would imagine the card could still handle it, I'm pretty sure my GeForce 3 ti250 would.
