anybody using their 6800GT/U in linux?

There probably isn't very many Linux users here on Hard with a 6800. Try nV News if your really interested. There are alot there.

What we need is some X800 vs 6800 Linux benchmarks. Now that would be hilarious lol.

that would be interesting for sure...

I have a 6800gt and would like to use linux but from what I hear it does not support the new amd 939 via chipset I just bought :(

I'm still waiting for a decent 64-bit Linux. Gentoo didn't work out too well for me. :(

Saw this thread yesterday and didn't get to try the card out in linux till today (didn't have the card till late yesterday). I'm on Gentoo using a 2.6.7 kernel and the latest nvidia drivers and it works just fine. In fact, a little too good. I put quake 3's maxfps to 500 and at 1024x768 i was pegged. Soi put it to 9999 and stared at a wall. And i saw it changing between 800 and 1000+. So yea, i'd say the card works just fine in linux :)

Yup, nVidia has excellent Linux drivers. Thats why i said it would be funny to see some 6800 vs X800 Linux benches because an nVidia FX 5200 can beat an ATI 9800 Pro in Linux gaming lol. And that just shows how damn important good drivers are. It doesn't matter how fast the hardware is, if you have driver issues its not going to perform well.

rofl, i didnt know that! thats pretty funny, and sad. :( i like ATi

decided to test it at 1600x1200 as well, same results, hits 1000+ looking at a wall, about 500 fps running around the level. this is at stock speed and no aa/af. of course when it hits 1000+ i lost the x axis on my mouse and am forced to reload the level. Still pretty cool tho.

and while we are on the topic of disgusting amounts of frames. glxgears, not like it has any real measurement, runs at 12750 fps when its in view and 18350 fps when minimized ;)

how readily can these drivers be installed on say.. SuSE? i really want to sample gaming on another O/S.

I've only tried suse once and I can't say it was enjoyable, but it did have a nice kde theme =P as far as driver availability goes, the drivers are available on nvidias site so it would just be a matter of updating them. i dont know if anything critical has changed to the install procedure, i would assume nothing has, but a suse forum might be a better spot to check for the specifics if you are unsure how to upgrade them yourself.

I couldn't find any benchmarks under Linux, so I decided to do my own.

Here are the results of a completely unscientific benchmark I ran under Debian Sarge comparing the ATi X800XT-PE and the GeForce 6800 Ultra (using the latest available drivers as of 2004/07/24)

GeForce 6800 Ultra: 65536
Radeon X800XT-PE: Banana

As you can see, the Geforce 6800 series clearly offers superior performance under Linux.
