I just bought a patch cable from newegg this one. It says that it is a Cat. 5e patch cable. (pays close attention to the period after cat) Is this the same thing at a Cat 5e cord or does the period actually mean something?

Reason I'm asking is because I tried to match up my cord from the one the microsoft gave me with my xbox. I just wanted a longer one. The Microsoft one is the cat 5e and the bought one is cat. 5e. it didn't work when I tried to use it to link up xboxes.

If you are trying to directly connect two XBOXs together, you will need a crossover cable, and not a patch cable, as far as I know.

Period shows that it is an abbreviation, in this case it is an abbreviation for Category.

If you want a cable to attach two xbox's together you will need a cross-over cable which means if you look both ends of the cable they should not match up. I have a feeling that the cable you bought was a straight through cable. If you did hook them up and they didn't work, then it is definately a straight through cable (only works from xbox to hub to xbox).
(Instead of a hub it could be a switch or a router). Therefore, you would need 2 straight through patch cables. You should try to return it and ask them for a cross-over cable.
