Does anybody have the Gametap pc thing here?

Curious as to how it is before I buy it. Looks kick ass with all the older dos and genesis games.
 
There's a large number of games to play, that's not a problem. I tried out the free trial a while ago, and I have one main beef with Gametap: you can't use the service unless your signed in online. That means trying to play a little Galaga, Pac-Man, Sonic, etc. is impossible if your just sitting around waiting for class to start (no wi-fi at my college). They should change it so that you can play the games offline. They could enforce some kind of rule so that users will have to log-in to the service once a month, every two weeks, every week, whatever to keep their offline service active. They just need to do something about it.

Assuming they ever do that, I'm going to sign up for the service. They allow main user and up to either six or seven sub-accounts, and two users total can be logged on at once. So, for example, I could create my little brother an account and I could play under my account at the same time. Or, if you wanted to, you could split the costs with a friend and that way you only pay $5 each monthly instead of $10 monthly.
 
I tried it, it was OK. The load times for some over the newer games is just insane. I couldnt take it.
 
Looks decent, but the problem is that most of the games could be obtained by other means. :cool:

Yes but this is a nice legal way of doing it.

To the OP
A few of my friends have tried it. The only real complaint they had(other then the need for internet so you can't really take the games to go) was that the dreamcast emulator they use to play the dc games didn't work for them. Everything elce was great.
 
I had it for a while, I got the free trial, When I tried to cancel, they gave me another month for free. There wasn't many games I liked on it, and the ones I do like are available on the Namco disks for the Xbox. I also found out I am a nintendo fan boy, which sucks because they have no Nintendo games at all, They say it is becaus when the Wii comes out they will have all there older games available on the Wii. I think I played it less then an hour for the 6 weeks I had it!
My Biggest complaint was that i could not cancel over the Net, You have to call to cancel, so that way they can try and talk you out of it! Also if your times up on a weekend don't forget to call by Friday to cancel!!! :mad:

Call up your credit card company and tell them that the Gametap isnt authorized to charge your card anymore. Make Gametap call you.

LOL whats up with every company trying to hold off their customers who simply want to cancel their subscription!...they had that on Tv the other day and it was hillarious. The average person spends about 20 mins on the phone with any company's customer service trying to cancel their service. :mad:
 
I signed up for GameTap today to try it out, and I am already canceling it. I found out you can't run Alocohol 120% on the same machine. It was either cool game thingy or Have to have all my CD's out to play games. I have kids so that is a hell no. Well I wish I could have tried it out. Maybe when they figure out a way to let it co-exist I will give it another shot. :mad:

Umm, not much too say. It SEEMS like they have a ton of games but they lack a lot of bigger games.

They dont have any Nintendo games.

Another problem is there is a lot of duplication with XBLA. Since I have a 360 I like trying out stuff on XBLA. So it's like, you can only have one source for your dinky old arcade games kinda thing. Once XBLA got Galaga and SF2, that tended to remove a couple reasons to play Gametap.

A lot of the games that seemed really fun now just seem dreadful and old. Like say, Golden Axe or Streets of Rage.

I dont know, there is just something missing by not playing them on the original systems. I can get a used sega Genesis at the local Game Exchange for around $20. For some reason this seems more appealing than gametap.

I haven't tried any of the games I would think would be more demanding on a system. Like Crazy Taxi, yet.

They also have some odd choices for a "plug and play" type system. For example, I noticed they have Baldurs Gate! That seems to be a pretty technicaly demanding and complex game for such a service as Gametap. Just seems...odd.

So all in all, I dunno. It could be cool if you dont have XBLA. In some ways it kicks XBLA's butt in having a lot more available. I dunno. But like, say Galaga, for some reason having access to both I seem more likely to play it on 360. The conversions on XBLA seem a bit higher qaulity.

Also when I first downloaded the service, it took FOREVER. I dont know what the hell it was downloading. Maybe it actually downloads every game on there to your computer? That's what it felt like.

I think Gametap was a great idea..the fundamental problem is services like XBLA. Because pretty soon Nintendo, Sony, etc are going to have the same type of thing. They're going to keep their games exclusive too, so Gametap will never be able to get for example, Nintendo's back catalogue now that Nintendo has a way to make revenue off them.
 
Well I am back with my GameTap update. I called them back to cancel since I couldn't get it to work. They somehow found a way to get it to work with Alcohol and I was able to play some SenGoKu last night. I am very happy now. I will see the rest of my trial works and see if my brother likes it too.
