Any value to an old Server?

My wife's company is moving a business, and they are tasked with disposal of two servers, one unkown, and one sun server. I've yet to see them, but I assume they are less than three years old. Do these have any value, parts wise? I assume you could canabalize memory and such, but you could theorrectically make a pc put of a server?

Of course, we cannot resell them or anything, but it might be fun to pull apart, like an old TV. hehe

Anyone ever do anything like this?

if they're less than 3 years old turn em into linux boxen and get folding!

3 years aint much, specially if they're built to be crunchers. Just stick linux on them or unix and use as servers. Turning a sun server into a desktop pc would be somewhat odd seeing as they use mainly stand-alone parts or modified parts.

On the value side, you could probably ebay the sun server, assuming its less than 3 years old for quite a bit if its half decent in the sense that it has more than one cpu. dual 1ghz p3 machines still get huge amounts on ebay.

yeah find out the specs - the sun you will prolly not have too much use for - unless you want a server of some sort - i'd sell that one
is the other server a stand alone or rack mount? amd or intel? (most likely intel) is it one with an agp port? if its a rack mount you prolly wont be able to use the system as a desktop - some parts mebbe - if its rack mount look at selling it too.
then use the $ for your desktop

The older sun maybe doomed to linux if it isn't an intel platform.

The other maybe of some use.
If not to them, they can write stuff off on taxes if the donate it to a charity or school that maybe looking for a small server.

Anything over 500 mhz, single or dual processor will still server files and printing pretty good.
Plus if they are actual servers, not desktops used as servers, they are built to a higher level, better psu's, possible redundancy etc.

and loud and loud and loud and loud... :D

I suppose it really depends on the type of sun box. If its a cobalt, they're pretty nice, little rack mountable jobbies and not too bad. Keep it and slap linux on it, most distros will work, you just need to know what architecture to install with.

i built my girlfriend and her brother systems from old servers that we were getting rid of at work, heres the specs...

2xP3 550@618mhz (katmai cores)
440BX Chipsets
1gb PC100
60gb ATA/100 7200rpm

...they are supprisingly pretty fast. i also scored a few sgi indigo2's and sun ultra 1's. the sgi's are r10000 200mhz, not sure on the ultra 1.
