Hello,

I am interested in buying a large flatscreen monitor. I would use it just for general computer use, i.e. internet/word processing/spreadsheets/e-mail/msn/watching dvds. I do not require any gaming qualities (PC/PS3/XBOX360).

Resolution is the most important area to me, I have noticed a lot of these 37" monitors do not have a higher resolution than the 24" ones. If this is the case, I wouldn't even consider getting anything bigger than 24".

My preliminary budget would be £500 ($980), I MIGHT be prepared to go slightly over this figure.

Kind Regards,
Mike.

P.S: I'm in England UK.

Most of the 37" panels are TVs and as such don't require anything more than 1920x1080 (16:9). However there are a couple 30" panels out that have a 2560x1600 (16:10) resolution. Apple and Dell both have one. But I think they're at least $1500 (I haven't checked lately).

Dell is also supposed to be launching a 27" panel, but I don't know any specifc details about it.

Given what I would use my monitor for, would you say the Dell Ultrasharp 2407WFP 24" widescreen LCD would be a good choice for me?

I would say yes, the slight possibility of slight banding (on the 2407 version A03) is not going to affect you with your modest requirements. I don't think, for your needs, that it's worth going up to the BenQ 24" because you're paying mostly for all those useless (for you) connections. Also BenQ are EVIL LIERS!!!

The 30" screens are also overkill for your needs, the resolution is higher but then the cost is double, even for the (soon to be replaced) Dell 3007. You'd be better off (resolution wise and probably usefullness wise) with two 24" Dells but again this would be overkill and way over your budget.

If resolution (pixel pitch) is important then go with the 30” Dell or Apple, because they have the greatest resolution currently offered for your application in non laptop displays – just by a little. The next step is the 23” ACD, or other 23” IPS you can find them, then the Dell 24” 2407 and the like (e.g. Acer, Samsung).
