My mother said that if I get a "B" in my Computer Information Systems Class that i will get a new vid. card(I currently have a "C")yet i do not kno what kind to get. I want a nice one but i dont want it to be too expensive. Any suggestions?

Cards worth looking at:

ATI Radeon 9600XT - $150
ATI Radeon 9800 Pro - $200
NVIDIA GeForce 6800 - $300
NVIDIA GeForce 6800GT - $400

best bang for the buck is right now 2 cards

the 6800nu and the 6800GT
with the 6800nu you can unlock the last 4 pipes very easy
the GT will reach Ultra specs with really no problems at all.

it all depends on your [H]ardness, lol.

It mostly depends on what your planning to play on your new vid card.
if you are going to be playing Far Cry style games, id go with the ati 9800 or the 6800 nvidia. The ati radeon 9800 pro 256 MB is really nice, i have one my self and i have no complains with it. I have played all of the current games with AA turned up. I cant speak for the Nvidia though.
If your gonna b CSing alot then a 9600xt will be good enouugh for that grade of gaming. I have the 9600xt in one of my other pcs, again a great card.

BTW - if your gonna play far cry get the 6800ultra, the 1.3 patch supports some new graphics system or something. i really dont know, but check the threads pertaining to that patch.

It is said that the 256mb 9800 pro is over rated and you wont use that extra 128 mbs in most games, not true.

If your on a budget, i suggest waiting till black friday and checking out your retail stores and online stores.

Go to the hot deals part of [H] forums, people list the best deals from all stores and online stores there all the time.

.
The 256mb 9800pro IS over rated. You do not need the extra 128mb unless you plan to use a resolution over 1600x1200. Look at the benchmarks, it makes no difference in speed. You basically paying an extra $100 for nothing.

Also the 9800pro overclocks well. I have mine at 421/760 right now.

I paid only 50 extra, and i do play sometimes @ 1600 x 1200. W.e, lets not make this an argument.

How did you OC yours? DId you install the firmware thing and change the cooling device on the card?

Do tell! I am thinking of the doing the same thing, but i dont want to void the warranty and start taking the fan of the card.

best bang will be for 6600 GT i'd say or the 9800 pro if it ever drops to competitive levels... i say wait for the 6600 GT(unless if u got a pci-e board) since u sound like ur on a budget and u obviously sound like u want to play the new games since u need a new vcard. correct me if im wrong tho...

While most of the replies point to a few cards to get, we cannot tell which one to get until we know what is the budget for a new card.

I agree with Xilikon

You need to let us know how much mommy is giving you, but in hopes you are a decent human being (and son), you should be doing your best in all your classes, regardless of an type of parental incentives.

Doesn't it strike you as kind of odd that you only seem REALLY motivated to turn a C into a B when your mom has to bribe you with a videocard?

I wish I had parents that bought me things, all they did was die when I was a kid (further complicating my situation).

What you should do (IMHO):

Get the "B" in your class anyways, get the ??? amount of money, buy your parents something nice & give them a card (a Hallmark card, not a videocard) with the money they gave you in it, get a job, save for a card yourself

I always find it humorous how these fresh-out-of-high school kids look forward to go to college and "get out on their own", yet continue to draw most/all of their income from their parents. Maybe I'm from an older school of thought, but that doesn't necessarily qualify as "getting out on your own". Not saying that you yourself fall into this category.

<descend from soapbox>

Good luck in your CIS course, I know they're are hard, I too am majoring in CIS.

Personally I would get a 9800SE 256bit 128mb and softmod it to a 9800Pro, just to save money (and install a VGA Silencer rev3). Otherwise, if you want to "go for the gusto", go with a 6800GT.

i say wait till the end of november and get a 6600gt AGP card for about 200 bucks.

its faster than a 9800xt and supports pixel shader 3.0, ultra shadow 2. bla bla bla , wanka wanka wanka.

btw if anyone wants to debate the speed go to video cards and look up 6600gt agp vs 9800 .
that debate has been settled.

just my opinion.

How much will she spend? Did she say any price?

She was jus like "If i get a "B" i get a new card" and im like okay w/e....named no price

If you dont have a zillion dollars unlike to propagandaist on this forum, and find it unreasonable to spend hundreds of dollars try and find a ati 9600xt 9800 or 9800 128 for between 130-150

I just switched over from the cataylsts to the omega drivers, then used radclocker to push the gpu/mem speeds. The only extra cooling I have on it now are some plain ramsinks that I just installed (for most of the time that I've had it overclocked I did not have these on). I do plan to replace the gpu cooler though.

I actually increased my 3dmark '03 score from ~5900 to ~6300 :)

quoted for truth, these are by far the best value AGP cards currently on the market depending on the price you can spend.

However, if you aren't getting your grades for another month or so, at the $150 and $200 price points the NVIDIA GeForce 6600 and 6600GT respectively will replace the 9600XT and 9800 Pro in terms of best value card.
