Any reason this NIC would not work?

Looking to add DELL J1679 DUAL INTEL PRO 1000 MT GIGABIT NIC to my ESXi5.1 system running on a Gigabyte 990FXA-UD3 mobo. Just want to be sure I'm not going to smoke something when I connect it up.

IF I should NOT use, what would you recommend? I'm needing an inexpensive dual or quad NIC.

Thanks

It uses a PCI-X interface. While it will fit in a standard PCI slot, you'll only get 1Gb of bandwidth from the slot for your 2x 1Gb network ports to use.

Go on ebay and find a used Intel Pro 1000 PT dual port or VT quad port. They're about $40 or $120 respectively. Avoid Broadcom.

Thanks for that. I had lost touch with all the various flavors of PCI. Wasn't sure where PCI-X was in relation to PCI-e or PCI-v3 or whatever is out there.

Figured there had to be a reason no one was jumping on those J1679 boards. At $10-15/ea I figured they would be getting snapped up by the ESXi community.

Found some Intel Pro 1000 PT duals for $30 with free shipping (at least I think it was free) so I'm gonna go that route.

Thanks!
