First the disclaimer.
Yes I know it's my fault for toasting the CPU.
Yes I know it was the risk I took with over clocking.
No I'm not crying over it. You have the pay to play sometimes.

With that said it seems my E6400 has died. I'm having a friend put it in his rig to confirm it but I have changed or tested everything other then the CPU. Ram was tested and works, mobo changed, PSU changed etc etc..

I overclocked it to 3.5ghz and was running fine on water but after it died and I took it apart it looks like I might have made a noob mistake and put the AC5 on a little too thick. In any case I think it's toast.

I just got the CPU from Newegg.com on 5/2007. Now my question is do I have any options on seeing if I can get it replaced or should I just make my son a necklace out of it? :p

Also, I dont think it was the paste.......take a look at how an OEM slaps on paste sometime. It was probably the OC in and of itself.:eek:
Some of these new processors will run for quite a while without any thermal material.

I have to ask, how the hell did you manage to toast it? 2.5v vcore on air cooling or something?
 
Thats what I was thinking. Toasting it at all would require huge voltages, otherwise the system would just become unstable and you would simply reduce the clock speed. What about making your own watch?
 
i would think it unfair of you to report it to newegg. seeing as how you did it yourself. I bet you could get a new one from intel, might take a while, but again, your fault :)

pay the price, go buy a e4300 :))

Well again I'm not 100% sure I did but after checking the ram in another system, changing out the PSU and changing out the mobo I still get a no boot. The system turns on but nothing happens. No video (either with onboard or card).

As I said about I don't know what, how or why. I was only running 1.45v with a 500fsbX7 and 2.0v mem. Nothing super crazy. I run this on air with little issue. At Quakecon I manage to get a DangerDen Waterbox and had all my water cooling parts sitting in my old AMD rig. I put the PC together and started testing it. Not leaks, ran cool so I started playing with the OCing. Hit my mark of 3.5ghz and started running SuperPi (8meg 22int) and the system locked up. From there it never booted again.

I would never do that to newegg. They have RMAed things for me in the past (legit stuff) and took care of me. No way I would do that.

Now I plan to call Intel cause after thinking about it more I'm more or less thinking the CPU just gave out. I'm sure OCing helped it along but I just think I might have gotten a Friday built CPU.

Ummm doesn't technically mean that you fried your cpu. What other methods have you tested. Try putting the cpu in another computer? have you tested any other hardware?

because stated above. Its very hard to fry a cpu.

To me it does not sound like your Cpu is pooched. Unless you have tried it in another computer. and from there it does not go.
 
i might be able to get you an e6420 for cheaper than brand new... pm me if you're interested.

I tell you, I did fry a CPU with overclocking just a month ago.

My beautiful e6700.

I put on a waterblock, it wasnt perfectly seated,there was a big gap. I thought I had it checked and double checked.......it was clocked to 3.35.

Powered it up, one series of loud bangs x 4 and the comp shut down, never to work again; until I replaced the CPU. Everything else survived intact: MB,RAM,Video,PSU, you name it.......so it is possible.:eek:
 
Damn. Yesterday I played with OC too much. Bumped up vcore to 1.5, restarted and the system locked up. Couple beeps and it was saying "Loading BIOS from HDD".. and PC shut down automatically. It was nothing else left, but reset the battery. It helped..

I'm giving the CPU to a friend to test it over the weekend. Other then that I have tried everything I can think of. I've replaced or tested everything and tried booting the system with the bare minimum parts (Mobo, PSU, CPUI and ram).

Thanks for the offer but with the prices of the Quad cores being so low I might just step up to the Q6600.
 
Sounds like you either popped the mobo or the PSU. Popping a CPU is damned hard, especially only at 3.5 under water.
