Hi guys, my friend put a heatsink on his southbridge with epoxy around the sides and ceramique on the center. His board broke and he needs to rma it. He needs to take the heatskink off. Anyone know about any chemicals or anything to get the heatsink off?

Freezer + screwdriver?

Put the board in the freezer, and then use a screwdriver to gently pry the heatsink off. It works for video cards with stock heatsinks, never done it with a heatsink on the m/b though.

Well I might get flamed for this answer but here goes nothing....

I epoxy heatsinks on my old Radeon 8500. Well I wanted to water cool the ram and see about getting a better o/c. But only one problem, I couldnt get the heatsinks off the ram. Well I found a stripper in Walmart at the Auto parts dept called "Aircraft Stripper". Its comes in a spray can with a blue outside label if I can remember right.

What I did was spray some around the edges where the ram and heatsink met. The stripper started to losen the epoxy and after a few hours I was able to take the heatsinks off. But you have to understand I couldnt leave the stripper on there too long becasue it started to eat away at the board. So what I did was wash a off the card then blow it off with a air compressor and applied another spray of stripper.

Dont know if I got lucky or not but it work. By the way the epoxy was Arctic Silver Thermal Adhesive.

Wont putting it in the freezer short it out?? And if it doesnt how long should I put it in??

??? Short out? haha :)
Leave it in there as long as you like, you're not thinking of putting the entire computer in the fridge powered are you? No electricity = no short. Heck, my basement flooded while an old comptuer was down there. Luckily, it was unplugged and worked fine afterwards when dried and cleaned properly.

You won't get condensation on the card anyway. The temperature is constant.

I usually put them in overnight to give the bond a chance to get brittle. There's only so far a kitchen refridgerator will get you though. Nonetheless, it helps.

You could usually use an acetone or strong alcohol overnight soak to dissolve epoxy. Acetone would eat your card. Try alcohol. The spray stripper described in this thread would help also.

If you can't pry the sink off after it's been in the fridge, seriously try a hammer and chisel. High impacts that are carefully done won't damage the bridge but will knock the sink off.

I'll tell him, thanks for the help now I know what to do if I get something that I epoxied off!

Tell him he modded the card thus he voided any warrantee he ever had.

I think this is fraud!
