Any .Mac users here?

How do you guys like it?

How well does the Sync component work?

How well does the Backup work?

Is it worth the $99 a year?

I'm trying to go completely Mac and .Mac looks cool, but is it really worth it? I'm still going to be using my private domain e-mail address. Does that even matter?

I have used it before a couple years ago. It wasn't anything to get excited about, I think I would just stick to whatever is free (gmail). The sync worked pretty good, but once again just not that impressed.

I got it for the first year I had my MacBook to get the whole 'Mac Experience' but it's just not worth it.

I have had .Mac for about 5 years. It has been useful for backups of all my documents and stuff. I have 10GB of online storage and it works great. Anyways, it has saved my arse more than a few times. Get it, especially if you buy a new Mac. you save $30.00.

I have the free trial going right now, and its alright. I would not pay $100 for it for a year, but I also have several other hosting services and my own webserver.

The sync is pretty cool to play around with, and I like having my ical, address book and email all in one place (but gmail does the same thing for me).

Its nice for quick, reliable access to your files.

I say try the free-trial and see how much you use it.

I use it for the photo galleries and remote backup.. it's not bad.

I just would make sure you try the trial first, and if you like it.. ebay a membership as it's way cheaper usually on ebay :)

The main reason I got .Mac was for the backup, but I learned about Mozy since then and am very happy with Mozy. Unlimited backup for $5 a month. http://mozy.com/

But try the .Mac trial first. It is a very rich utility, you might use some of the other functions.

I recently subscribed to .Mac after having the trial 3-4 years ago. When I first tried it out it wasn't worth it to me. However now that I have 4 Macs (two laptops + MacPro + iMac, all for development) I find that .Mac saves me time and frustration by keeping all my preferences sync'd. The sync services are worth it to me alone. Backup is nice but I already have a backup solution. Everything else is gravy.

Having access to my data from anywhere is also cool but I'm a hermit, so that's moot. :D

Sounds good guys, I'll probably give the trial a shot before my next trip.

I find it quite handy at times - but then I just signed up for everything when I got back into Macs a while back. I probably don't use $100's worth of it in terms of what I do with it, but it's cool sometimes to be able to use what it offers.

I think you have to buy into the whole Apple Way in order to be feeling it. There are cheaper and also free alternatives to what you can do in .Mac but it's distributed and involves more of an effort.
