I hate to use the word Cloud, but I just did. I'm not sure how you would actually classify this thing. It's not quite distributed computing but certainly is distributed storage. I don't know how it's data replication/recovery works at all.

Last night, I started reading about the implications of Microsoft removing Drive Extender from future releases of Windows Home Server and came across Gluster. From what I've seen so far, it can be set up as it's own OS, probably recommended for the first computer in the cluster, or support installed into existing Linux distros such as CentOS, Fedora and Ubuntu. The servers and storage pool are managed through a web interface.

I was about to install it on an old Dell I have sitting at my desk until I discovered that it's a 64-bit kernel. It will have to wait till later. Has anyone used it and have thoughts on it's implementation? I'll eventually get it installed on a 1156 and if I like it, a few Intel Atom boards might be on order.

Had developers play with it. Doesn't scale as well as Lustre. I'd look there first....Lustre is a neat product but has a _very_ steep learning curve.
