Any downsides to USB headsets ?

Any USB peripheral is going to be a resource hog compared to an "old tech" version. I'd be reluctant to pair a USB headset with, say, an online game of Motor City Madness. But I know a lot of people who use USB headsets for telephony and office apps and love them.

If getting behind the computer to hook them up is the problem with using a headset with miniplug connectors, why not look into a headset switch? I have an old Microsoft Game Voice I keep around for just this reason. I think Radio Shack has a small desktop box that allows you to plug in your headset and switch between speakers and headset for a few bucks.

I have no problems with using my headset. Atleast none with telephony apps.

The downside is it's a Headset AND Soundcard attached through USB. They work, I have used one personally (Labtec $50), but they are about the quality of onboard sound and a $20 headset with more CPU usage. Note: they still work, even for games.

I had conflict errors with my plantronics drivers and my soundcard drivers even after making the USB device default. My system would hard crash in Win98. I fixed this by completely removing my sound card.

I also noticed a huge improvement in framerates in CS when I reinstalled my soundcard after the DSP 500 broke (after 5 months). This was with a P3 1000, but it was nearly 20 frames on average.

Overall sound was not too bad I have to say. There was a constant hissing sound when nothing was playing. I think that goes along the same lines as a previous poster mentioned regarding the quality of the built-in "sound card".

If you like them, give them a shot. For gaming purposes I would stick with a regular sound card.

alright, i have no problems with just using the sound card but seems the higher end models of headsets use usb. Can you guys recommend a decent headset under 50$ ? I'm mostly into cs playin so sound is high priority.

Use that ecost link- I bought my PC150's from the same place a couple months ago. Can't say the sound is too much better, but the mic is LEAGUES better. (just my recommendation)

The 130's are open and have lesser drivers in both frequency response and distortion. The 150's are closed. They appear to have the same mic. For the price you quote, not bad, but I like my 150's :).

alright thx for all your help :) i decided to get the 150s since they were only 43$ with shipping :)
