Any downsides to underclocking besides less system performance?

Well, the obvious about underclocking your system bus and CPU is slower system performance. But are there any other side affects to underclocking a system besides just performance? And would underclocking a socket 478 Celeron 400MHz FSB be an ok thing to do? The reason I ask is because the slowest FSB for socket 478 Celeron is 400MHz, so would underclocking a socket 478 Celeron FSB say to 350MHz make it's performance even worse than a socket 370 Celeron run at stock speed? If you want to know why i want to underclock, I'm looking to build a silent PC.
 
you can build silent PCs without under clocking. Get quiet fans, some nice thick rubber washers for ur hard drive.

Thanks for the tip, but I'm looking to go completely fanless. So I want to know just about the underclocking part if there are any side effects besides just a performance loss?
 
besides performance loss there wont be much. but lowering the fsb bus wont do anything to lower the heat output of your cpu, you have to lower the vcore. at least im pretty sure thats the key to lowering heat output.
anyone else correct me.
 
that sounds about right but to go compleatly fanless for the cpu your ganna need a pretty nice neat sink on the cpu like a zelmans or somthing like that or your libal to cook it

Yeah, I did dort of know that, however, you may have to lower the FSB in order to get the CPU to run stable at a very low VCORE? Another thing, would a socket 478 CPU at less than a 400MHz FSB perform worse than a socket 370 CPU at it's stock speed? The reason I ask is because it just seems odd to go lower than the minimum FSB that any of the socket 478 CPUs ran at stock as opposed to getting a socket 478 CPU stock 533 FSB and underclocking it to 400 FSB which is what many socket 478 CPUs already run at? I'm not looking for the absolute best performance I can get, but I don't want to construct a socket 478 Celeron say 2GHz with a 400MHz FSB underclocked to 1.8GHz at 360MHz FSB, and have a system that runs slower than a socket 370 1.4GHz 100MHz FSB. Get the point?
 
i've got some silent x that you cant even hear, one fan isnt gonna be noisy at all and its better safe then sorry :rolleyes:
 
If your looking for a P4 processor that can run at low voltages on a good board pm me I have a 1.6ghz northwood mobile that just doesn't like my motherboard that might work in your motherboard.
