I have a socket 478 P4, which is supported by both. Does anyone know specifically something different between the A and non-A model that woudl affect me?

The A comes with mounting hardware for socket 462.

The -A version adds Socket A compatibility... it wouldn't matter to you. I don't think there are any other refinements.
