I've been using a Samsung P193+ VA based monitor for over ten years. Absolutely love it, except the 1280x1024 resolution is not ideal for video editing. I tried a couple of IPS based monitors a few years ago, but couldn't stand the IPS glow and returned them.

I decided to give it another try and just bought a Dell U2415 IPS monitor. It has nice color, no stuck pixels, and good blacks. Unfortunately, it has the same shimmering glow I saw in the previous IPS monitors I had tried. Blacks look nice, but any bright colors have a weird shimmery glow that is really hard on the eyes. The viewing angles are also MUCH worse than my old Samsung P193+ monitor.

I lowered the brightness down to 7, but the U2415 still has the shimmery glow on any bright parts of the screen. I don't know how anyone tolerates this.

Does anyone make a 22-24" VA based monitor anymore? I would prefer 1920x1200 resolution, but I would accept 1920x1080 if it meant I could do away with the weird glow.

I don't play games, just general computing, programming, and video/photo editing.
 
Eizo Fg2421 is one but the color accuracy is terrible (usually green tint and undersaturated reds without calibration and profiling) and you may have to do some panel lottery to get a good one without issues. Its a gaming monitor first and foremost, all other features be damned.

If you are not picky about 24" Samsung makes pretty good 27" 1080p VA panel monitors with good default color accuracy. This for example.Samsung S27E650C Review - PC Monitors

It is curved but very mildly so. And the curve will help with the horizontal gamma shift VA panels suffer from. Investing in colorimeter and doing a calibration is still recommended if color accuracy is any concern, no matter what monitor. Even a basic Spyder5 will suffice.

24" is about the max I can fit on my desk. No interest in curved monitors.

I'll take a look at the FG2412. It's a bit more than I was wanting to pay, and the reviews seem mixed, but I'm willing to pay for a good monitor.

Another annoyance I've seen with my U2415 IPS monitor; black text on a white background looks grey. Actually, white text on a black background looks kind of grey too. Turning down the sharpness setting on the monitor has helped, but doesn't eliminate it.

Well, if color accuracy is any importance FG2421 is NOT a good monitor because its color accuracy is shitty as I mentioned. Only reason why the monitor gets mentioned is because it was the only VA panel monitor specifically made for gaming at the time, the only choice for gamers who wanted a deep contrast ratio (which it does deliver, one of the best blacks LCD monitors can deliver) but still had fast enough response times and high refresh rates. Nowadays it does have some competition but they are all bigger size, ultrawide screens and such.
 
I would be looking at a HP 25XW. Looks like a good allround monitor/panel, with high contrast and low glow but also good response times.

VA panels do look really nice, but the motion performance is lacking.

I've also found the viewing angles to be MUCH, MUCH less than the advertised 178 degree angles. For instance, text is already hard to read on the U2415 but becomes washed out and illegible if I move too far to the side. When I walk into the room, the monitor is so grey and washed out I can't even tell it is on until I sit down in front of it. I had the same experience with the other two IPS monitors I tried, so I don't think it's a bad monitor.

That's the monitor I got, and love it. It's not without faults; some have more issues with it; but no gaming for you won't matter (seems to be the bulk if issues response times, and I think it's part revision issues as I personally don't notice/have the obvious blur/etc.) But COLOR WISE - I do editing, not mainly on this but like to use it if needed and it's tested 100% or darn close sRGB; few IPS at these prices are that. LEt alone 8 bit true color that's big personally. The contrast is awesome; gray scale was great, not excellent, but better than any IPS I tried at these ranges. This thread you'll find more; now, it has some center-on crush, and gamma shifting like VAs are known for is still there; it won't look "washed out" like U2 except from extreme angles; vertical shift is minimal imo, side to side is the bulk of shifting; I wouldn't say these VA are 100% 178 either; definitely close, part of that is the center-on crush VAs have aka darkening of shades/black looking straight/from center. You'll have to see it all for yourself. I still think this monitor > any IPS at these ranges esp if you hate IPS glow/etc. you'll have to venture into closer to 300 dollars for IPS that deliver actual 100 sRGB and are 8 bit

The BenQ GW2470H is supposed to arrive Monday, so it will be interesting to compare with the Dell U2415.

Years ago someone pointed out the black crush and gamma shift on my old Samsung P193+ monitor. I had never even noticed it before, and it certainly never bothered me once I knew it was there. In contrast, the glow/bleed/shimmer of the IPS panels I have tried is so obvious it hurts my eyes.

Monitors tend to last me a long time, so I'm willing to spend $500-700 or so if I can find a good one that won't hurt my eyes. I do have an older Spyder calibrator I can use to tweak the color accuracy if needed.
 
While VA panels are suspectible to black crush due to the way it works its always a calibration issue and can be usually fixed if the monitor comes with gamma controls. If not then with a help of colorimeter. Even IPS panel can crush blacks if the gamma curve is too high at the low end by default. You can always test the black crush it with the Lagom.nl Black level page and watch it in a dark room. Number 1 box should be just barely detectable from the black background and number 2 should be just and just visible. Number 3 however should be visible without problems. If that is not visible then you are severely losing black details.

I have not noticed any gamma or color shift with the Dell U2415, it just has a really bad glow to it. I don't know the difference between backlight bleed and IPS glow to know which it is, but it's really hard on the eyes. Black text on a white background is especially hard to read.

I did not try a second U2415, but have tried two other IPS panels in the past (A Dell 2311H and a Dell 2211H). I had the same issues with the glow from all of them. I guess I'm just more sensitive to it than most people.

I've also been surprised by the poor viewing angles. I always though IPS panels were supposed to be great from any angle, but all three I tried look really washed out and barely visible once you move off to the side. My old Samsung P193+ looks like a photograph on a wall, the same colorful picture from anywhere in the room. In contrast, if I move to the left side of my U2415 (viewing straight on), the right side of the screen is slightly darker. If I move to the right side (again, viewing straight on), the left side of the screen is slightly darker. It's really annoying having the screen changing brightness levels with every little shift and tilt of my head. But again, maybe I'm just more sensitive to it.

You either had magic calibration or a great panel; I can't see 1 viewing dead on/center - still get crush. Do you have the ICC from the hardware? I used an older Spyder2 - I just accepted there's going to be black crush; even if it was improved. ALSO - I rechecked I thought you said you had a GW2470H, maybe you have a different VA monitor? Anyways...

I just unboxed the BenQ GW2470 and plugged it in. As usual, the monitor comes defaulted with the brightness cranked up, so the first thing I did was lower the brightness to 27, change the contrast to 30, and the sharpness to 3. I'll probably tweak those later on as I use the monitor more, but it's a more comfortable place to start.

With less than 30 minutes of use, my first impression is quite positive. There's none of the dreadful glow I saw on the IPS monitors. I did prefer the 1920x1200 resolution, but I think I can adapt to the 1920x1080 screen. That's still more space than my old 1280x1024 monitor.

The two immediate negatives I found with the GW2470:

1. The supplied HDMI cable was only five feet long, too short to reach my graphics card. Easily fixed with my own six foot HDMI cable.

2. The supplied monitor stand does not have adjustable height, so it sits too high on my monitor shelf. However, I already picked up an aftermarket stand so that problem is easily overcome as well.

I did some quick testing at the lagom.nl site, and as expected there is a bit of black crush. I might be able to minimize that with some calibrating, but that's a minor issue to me. Ironically, the "white saturation" is MUCH better on the GW2470. The Dell U2415 wouldn't display anything but the darkest 200 block.

The viewing angle is also MUCH better than the Dell U2415. Maybe slightly worse than my old Samsung P193+, but certainly acceptable for normal situations.

I still need to do more testing, but I'm liking what I'm seeing so far. I'll post more later.

No I have the Eizo FG2421 monitor. For calibration I use I1 Display Pro and software I use is DisplayCAL. I also use variety of different calibrations, 2.2 on desktop and some games and BT.1886 for movies and other games. When I do a flat 2.2 power law gamma without any black compensation the number 1 box is indeed very hard to see, its technically a "shade of black" and thats what it should be, part of the black details. Box number 2 is more clearly visible and obviously grey. BT.1886 gamma curve makes the both number 1 and 2 bit pop out a bit more but box 1 is still very much a shade of black. Still visible with AVSHD calibration disc with the pulsating pluge pattern.

Ironic since that feature is supposed to reduce blurring. :)

I still need to try mounting the aftermarket stand and calibrate the display using my old Spyder calibrator, but so far this is looking like a keeper...

Oh the AMS yeah; High DOES help in gaming; premium is weird it overshoots and overall isn't good; general use and movies OFF is preferred as those issues go away; Lemme know what u think overall really need time to sink in; also what your calibration shows; I'll share mine when I redo it. This monitor is not without it's faults but compared to similar priced sub 300 IPS panels; it's superior imo say for the shifting/some viewing angles; I'm gonna try ONE more IPS MX259h only 8 bit I found in sub 300 range; but everytime I just like the BenQ more, no monitor will be perfect esp these ranges; I can tolerate any VA "issues" much more than IPS (6 bit+frc, horrible glow and poor contrast/gray scales, and as I said most aren't even near 90% sRGB).

Ohhhh the Eizo if I could afford that I would. 120hz VA; higher contast. 1 yeah I meant box 2 :p I see you switch yeah; I've thought to do this (profiles over presets) but yeah thanks makes sense now, I still think the BenQ can be calibrated to lessen the crush but not sure nonexistent. I need to recalibrate as I lost my data in a reinstall.

Unfortunately, the feet stick way out in front of the monitor, so I'm on the hunt for a different stand now. I'll probably go with the style that clamps to my desk instead of the free standing style.

Haven't had a chance to play with the calibration yet.

Any idea how the Eizo FG2421 compares with the BenQ GW2470? Pro's and Con's?

Calibration is mandatory to make your final choice. The FG2421 is 600 dollars. Out of your said ranged; maybe ebay, it's an older panel but it is pricey for a reason; Differences basically 120hz vs 60hz, 5000 contrast vs 3000, and maybe slightly better/more accurate colors, still you wouldn't need 120hz; and there's less expensive option alternative to the 2470H; the VZ2470H is ugly white slightly newer, EW2440L is all over in price 190 at Newegg 300 at Amazon (seller). The older GW2760HS has this color shift tech (marketing really but reviews have shown it works BUT it's said these newer VAs incorporate it) but I hate 27'' I'd go UHD then; or go back to trying IPS. I was hard to decide which to try; imo BenQ has the best 100-300 range VAs; other than liyamas. There's new VAs on their way soon from Samsung;

I liked the stand personally; ironic I liked that it was higher; as every other monitor is way too low imo; but that's me :p All is situational.

I used my Spyder 3 calibrator this afternoon on the GW2470. Really improved the look of photographs, but the recommended brightness is a bit too bright for me. I lowered the brightness but haven't recalibrated yet. Looks good though.

My monitor sits on a shelf that is already six inches higher than my desk. Add the 5-6 inches with the supplied stand and the monitor sits up way too high. Looking up at it is not comfortable long term. I basically need the bottom of the monitor to sit an inch or so above the desk. Lower is better, but I need room to get my fingers underneath for the controls.

The change from CCFL to LED was a change to the worse for the most part (unless color critical tasks were you need wide gamut options). 10years+ old monitors also used the ATW-Polarizer to brutally reduce "glow" like the old Apple Cinema Display.

Blurring is what that monitor does best. lmao I sent it back because it was so bad. If you think black text on white is bad then you ain't seen nothing yet! Try grey and it becomes really appalling. ie blur fest. I was not the only person on this forum to return it because of it's poor handling of anything but static content. BTW do not believe the reviews because they should not be taken at face value, they must of been paid by BenQ to write such fictitious and unrepresentative reviews.

Trust me, this is where Eizo dropped the ball in case of FG2421. It is fast and it has very good contrast ratio but the gamut triangle is very skewed, meaning the color accuracy is crap. Its sRGB coverage is only 89% on mine, with the reds being undersaturated and greens off shooting towards the yellow, making the screen have a distinct sickly green hue (and making calibration and using 3DLUTs in games almost necessary). And after calibration the extremes on red and purple get clipped due to the skewed gamut, it simply cant reach the edges of sRGB triangle. Its a trade off, either having a sickly greenish picture or having the brightest 50 shades of red clipped.

Even though I have not seen the Benq nor I cant find any reviews with measurements I am sure it is more accurate display as far as colors go.
 
Blurring is what that monitor does best. lmao I sent it back because it was so bad. If you think black text on white is bad then you ain't seen nothing yet! Try grey and it becomes really appalling. ie blur fest. I was not the only person on this forum to return it because of it's poor handling of anything but static content. BTW do not believe the reviews because they should not be taken at face value, they must of been paid by BenQ to write such fictitious and unrepresentative reviews.

Where's my check BenQ? :p Many have this issue; many aren't bothered as much by it; or maybe a revision helped as from what I've found all had the same revision with the horrible blurring, mines newer maybe slightly improved, maybe I'm not bothered by it; either way we get it, you hate BenQ and the GW2470H as posted all over this forum. :) Personally my main beef is with the off center crushing and shifting over any blurring; plus I have a stuck pixel. I love the contrast and color accuracy and 8 bit awesome of the 2470 but I may need a less shifty panel, no matter the calibrations the center crush is there. I am gonna try a few more monitors before my 30 days are up. It's about what negatives you can tolerate/prefer, as even a 600 dollar monitor as Maza says below has it's big issues. I will say I was initially a bit overly gung ho about this panel, skewed by my poor experiences with a few IPSs.

Trust me, this is where Eizo dropped the ball in case of FG2421. It is fast and it has very good contrast ratio but the gamut triangle is very skewed, meaning the color accuracy is crap. Its sRGB coverage is only 89% on mine, with the reds being undersaturated and greens off shooting towards the yellow, making the screen have a distinct sickly green hue (and making calibration and using 3DLUTs in games almost necessary). And after calibration the extremes on red and purple get clipped due to the skewed gamut, it simply cant reach the edges of sRGB triangle. Its a trade off, either having a sickly greenish picture or having the brightest 50 shades of red clipped.

Even though I have not seen the Benq nor I cant find any reviews with measurements I am sure it is more accurate display as far as colors go.

Sucks; that's most important to me color accuracy measured with black scale balance. Yes, one thing the BenQ GW2470H has going for it is basically upper 90s sRGB coverage. And 8 bit. Compared to sub 300 IPSs. I've read more and see that's a common thing with the Eizo.
