I have a new auto battery that is a spare and I am wondering if anyone knows of a kit to make it into a UPS. I think a lot of the UPS are 12 V anyway. A DC converter would do half the job, and I suppose a trickle charger would do the other half but that is not a good solution. thanks!

Unless you have an Optima or other type of SEALED lead acid car battery, it's not a good ideal to use a car battery for UPS. You more common car batteries can discharge explosive hydrogen gas during charging.

Unless the battery is stored in a detached garage or soem out building, I wouldn't want a car battery for my UPS.

Besides, a car battery is designed for quick high bursts of current. You want a battery designed for slow long periods of discharge. What is called a deep cycle battery.
