Any additional 1U considerations?

This could be an interesting question for anyone that has an SFF (shuttle or otherwise):

Other than the recomendations in the sticky thread regarding good PSU brands, are there any other recomendations on what to look for when getting a 1U PSU?

Keep in mind that SFF computers generally have 1 graphics card, 1 HDD and 1 DVD, not much more. Should we still follow the recomentations by Nvida and ATI to get 350Watt PSU for a brand-new card?

Also, I have noticed that PSUs rated 300Watt and below have a 15 to 18 Amps in the +12V rail, and as soon as you go 350Watt, the +12V rail gets boosted up 20 to 28 Amps. Is 18 Amps going to starve an SFF system?

1U power supplies are often engineered for a specific need/use. And certainly no high end video cards. ;)

Like an Ablecom PWS-021, for example.. It only has 13A on the 12V. :D It'll run a dual Xeon and a four drive RAID, though. ;)

:(

I guess I'm stuck with my 6600GT for a while :,(

Even with a riser card (which you would HAVE TO use in a 1U case) how would you fit anything more than a 6600GT in a 1U chassis??? Or WHY would you have even a 6600GT in a 1U chassis?

What am I missing here?

Are you talking about putting a 1U PSU in an SFF case? That's not going to fit. Different form factors.

Actually, I think they do fit. At least the latest Shuttle-brand PSU looks exactly like a 1U (Older Shuttle SFF models do not accept this newer PSU).
(edit: ok, i checked specs and this PSU is quite shorter than a 1U, but H and W are very similar)

I have a custom-built computer, with a mATX mobo, a 1U PSU, a laptop DVD and a HDD (standard 3.5"). I have just enough room for a full-sized video card (but no room for those exotic heatpipes that go arround the side of the card).

Since SFF-sized computers are a growing segment, I figured that some people might want to know about 1U-sized PSUs just in case they had to upgrade to feed those newer videocards.

I'm telling you... They're different.

Shuttle SFX (which is the newer SFF form factor) is: 3.2" x 5.9" x 1.7"

1U is: 3.94" x 9.84" x 1.59"

Wow, I better play closer attention if I upgrade.

And 5.9" long? that SFX is really dinky!!

Still bigger than the SFF PSU's when they first came out!

All bow down before the Inquisitor!

He has drank from the PSU fountain of knowledge! All Hail!!

PS: Seriously, I'm still tempted to get a good PSU and try my luck with a new X1800, depending on it's power draw when it comes out (ATI is normally less power-hungry than Nvidia, right?).
PS2: OMG i am going through your mishap pics... SOOOOO funy!! ..Not that I would ever do something like that :D... wait, yes I did! I decided to ship a full computer to my folks via USPS... bad idea. The HS came off the CPU, even the side pannel looked like it had been kicked in. I took it back to the post office to claim my insurance money.. never saw the money nor the computer again, ever.

For a good 1U PSU take a look at Zippy, Enhance, Enlight, Ablecom, or Etasis. Delta makes the 1U PSU's you find in Intel branded servers, but I can't seem to find a reasonable price on a separate PSU.
