if you have a crossfire capable motherboard.
6990 performance will be between a 6950 and 6970 crossfire performance.
I'd look into two 6950s unlocked to 6970s. At $600 bucks (or $560 if you get the gigabytes) its prob going to be the best bang for your buck if you have a crossfire capable motherboard.
I have a Gigabyte EP45-DS3L. It only has one 2.0X16 pci-e slot. The rest are PCI-E X1. That, and my psu will probably not run two 6950s. Plus, I do not want to rebuild for this just yet. I will when I can get a new cpu, mobo, ram.
Single slot cards are required to draw under 300 watts, even if its duel gpu. So 6950s or 6970s In crossfire will probably draw more power and require a higher watt psu.I hate to break this to you , but the 5970 is two gpus in one card , the 6990 will be the same thing. it will simply be either two 6950s or 6970s. The 5970 i believe were 5870s but at 5850 clock speeds. So we might see a fully enabled 6950 but lower clocked than the 6970.
If your power supply wont run crossfired 6970s or 6950s it will most likely not run a 6990
