next semester i'm going to be moving into an apartment with some friends who smoke pretty regularly, sometimes inside. while my room will be just me and i won't be smoking in there, i've seen what cigarette smoke can do to the inside of a case (yeah, and i know what they do to your lungs too) and was just wondering if there's any specific material that's best at blocking smoke from getting inside. i use dryer sheet fan filters right now but i was thinking maybe some of that sound dampening foam might work without restricting too much airflow. any tips aside from "don't move in?"

I use furnace filter media, cut-to-fit over the intake port of my case. It's the white fan-fold media you find in large frames at hardware stores like Home Depot and Walmart.
It's thick, due to the fan-fold, but the fan-fold provides greater surface area and very low flow-restriction. Due to the thickness, I just tape the filter media over the case intake port for quick and convenient replacement.
I'm a heavy pipe smoker. The white media shows trapped smoke particles very easily. I see the darkening of the filter surface daily, so I know it's an effective filter. The surface of the current filter is almost black, but no detectable reduction of air flow or increase in case internal temps - after a month.
I was tipped to this filter media by a poster at SPCR. It's the most efficient filter media I've tried, much less restrictive than dryer sheets, nylons, foam, etc. It also is better at reducing the noise of the front intake fan.
The down side is the thickness (about 1" due to folding). You'd probably have to modify your case to mount the media inside the case. My case is modified to allow that (suspended HD), but I surface-mount the media for convenience.

You could aways just get a can of air and do routine cleanings.
To be honest, I'm like a heavy chain smoker and (while it does make me nervous sometimes) I don't think I've ever had a single component damaged due to smoke or ash. It will basically do the same thing as dust only faster. Especially if your room-mates don't smoke in your room it shouldn't be anything to worry about.

And what about the tar+dust problem? Compressed air isn't going to help much there.

The pleated filters are good.
There are different grades of air filter material and some are rated for better smoke filtration than others. Read the fine print on the filter packaging and see which ones will filter smoke better. Be prepared for a higher price for the good stuff.
this makes me happy to hear that, and i'm going to look into the furnace filter. i've got a good amount of room between my case and the detachable front panel (one of those skyhawk lain-li knockoffs that were going around for a while - quite a nice case if i do say so myself).
