Antec True Power Trio Question

Hey guys,

This is my first PC I've built by myself so forgive the stupid newbie question.

I have the Antec True Power Trio TP3-650 and the Antec 182 case.

My question is does it matter if the fan in the power supply is facing down or up? Seems to me down is better cause the cables are to the inside case wall and you have more length. With the fan facing down, you still have like an inch between the PSU and the floor of the case. Also, the sticker is write side up when it's facing down but the ANTEC engraved in the PSU is upside down so.. I was a bit confused.

Thanks for your help!

Jamie :)

I emailed Antec yesterday to ask them. here's what they said.

Hello James, Make sure to point the power supply fan down toward the bottom of the enclosure, the Power supply mount is raised to allow more air to be intaked from the lower 120mm fan.

I actually went ahead and installed the fan facing down towards the bottom of the case like they recommended (sweeeet) :D

Guess my instinks were right. :p

Yes, it matters. The fan should stay face-down because hot air always tend to go upwards (hot air generated inside the PSU should be able to go up and out easily). Fan sitting at the bottom helps cool air intake for this process. 1" gap is sufficient. I have teh same case (with a single fan PSU).

OK GUYS!

Got the Fan in and MB in and now I have another question.

The problem I'm having is this. Go to this link to my psu.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817371001

Now click on the images and find the one that has the cables labled. (I tried to post the pic but I can't get it working - sorry) :(

See the 4-pin CPU power connector at the bottom of the pic and the 8-pin connector? Well my Antec True Power Trio TP3-650 doesn't come with the 8-pin just the 4-pin!

However, my Intel D975XBX2 comes with the 2X2 to 2X4 adaptor (cool) BUT!!! Intel says not to use it on their website (like huh?)

Now MAYBE they mean a different 2X2, not the one that came WITH the MB.

In fact... their 2X2 to 2X4 adaptor is on their packing list with a pic and all.

So here's what Intel had to say about using a 2X2 adaptor.

"Do Not Use 2x2 Power Cable Adapters"

Synopsis

Adapter cables are available that allow the incorrect use of older ATX or SFX power supplies in place of an ATX12V or SFX12V power supply. Intel does not recommend the use of these cables. These cables convert a standard 1x4 peripheral connector to the ATX12V 2x2 connector. An ATX12V or SFX12V with the 2x2 connector is required for all Pentium® 4 processor based Intel® Desktop Boards. Using the 1x4 converter cables can lead to system component or power supply damage and/or boot failures. The ATX12V and SFX12V power supply design guides (http://www.formfactors.org/) †recommend a minimum of 8A at 12Volts to properly power any Pentium 4 processor based Intel® Desktop Board. Standard ATX and SFX power supplies typically provide approximately 5A of current, which is not capable of reliably powering the Pentium 4 processor based Intel® Desktop Board.

Also in the PDF manual (page 50), there's a pic that shows you how to connect the 2X2 to a 2X4 adaptor if needed (hmmmm).

So which one is it?

Thanks again for all your help!

The "Do Not Use 2x2 Power Cable Adapters" part refers to converting a 1x4 connector to 2x2, not 2x2 to 2x4.

It's interesting that your PSU doesn't come with the 8-pin connector. My TP3-550 comes with one. Maybe it was added sometime after the product came out.. dunno.

According to the picture in NewEgg page, your PSU should have an 8-pin connector. What do you exactly have?
