i've been trying to find the source of the magnetostriction noise on my newly built pc. for those who dont know, it's that annoying buzzing noise when 3d apps run and when certain animations display in windows. i used to think it was my new x1900xt because the noise only came after i installed it, but now i'm almost positive that it's my power supply. i was reading on some forum that stopping the fan on the psu to isolate the noise would help so i went to the back of my computer. lo and behond, the fan was already stopped(!). now, i know that i'm probably overloading my psu and causing this noise which is why i already placed an order for a pcp&c510sli, but come on, how much can this antec psu suck?

it seems that a lot of systembuilders run into this problem and think that the problem is caused by video card, motherboard, ram, etc.. i'm hoping that i made the right choice by ordering a new power supply. if the problem goes away after i swap the psu, i'll be sure to inform everyone on all the threads that i've found about the issue. so far i havent seen a lot of posts about people swapping their power supply and getting rid of the problem. it's very possible that those who do are happy the problem is gone and never update their threads.

and my psu fan has stopped spinning again... i may have to power this rig down until my 510sli comes.
 
I read on a couple other forums, many have the same problem you do.

And it seems to effect those with antec smart power psus.
 
i'm glad i narrowed it down to this power supply. do you think it's safe to run the psu with one fan down for a few days until i get my replacement?

i'm still a little worried that the sound may be coming from the video card, but it's unlikely.
 
I recently experienced the same problem when I was building a system for my dad. I was hearing a wierd, faint buzzing sound from an Antec smartpower psu. I know that it was coming from the psu because I had another on hand, swapped, and the sound was gone. I didn't want to use the other psu, though, because it was a cheapo psu that I didn't trust for the long run. So, for some reason I decided to swap video cards. I originally had a radeon 8500 in it, so I swapped to a geforce 4 card I had just to try to get the noise to stop. I just about fell over laughing when it worked, as the Antec psu quit making the noise. Again, I know for sure that the noise was coming from the psu, so I do honestly belive, assuming that our problems with the psu are the same, that you made the right choice in getting a new psu. It's too bad though...it's a nice psu, just an annoying noise. I hope it fixes the problem for you.

The fans on the smartpowers only spin when they sense that the psu is hot enough to need it, so don't worry about the fan, particularly the one on the back. It pretty much never spins. I have the same 400W sp on my system, and it only spins when the psu gets hot.

Hope you get your problem fixed, I think you made a good choice. The PSU can be the source of a LOT of hardware problems.
 
i thought i was the only one (with a dying psu). my SEASONIC 430 makes buzzing sounds. scrolling up and down firefox gives me a buzz...everything seems to be fine though.

i find it incredibly irritating. my buzzing is also probably a little worse than yours. it's constant in gaming and happens during specific animations in windows. i also have an a8n motherboard though. hmm..
 
If you take the X1900xt out and replace it with something else does the noise dissapear?

Reason being, I read about the XT series cards in a hardware forum that caused the noise.

I do not have the link ATM
 
no it's just like yours. it happens for any action on the screen...really annoying. luckily, my computer is in a spot where i can't really hear it and my tv is always on :)

i didnt have the noise when i had an x300se. i think the noise is being caused by my psu being overloaded. only two more days until i get my pcp&c510sli.
 
well my psu is definitely NOT overloaded.

3200 not oc
7800gt (less power than 6800gt)
a8n-sli
2x1gb ram
1 hd
1 optical
like 4 usb devices always hooked up

that adds up to much less than 430. is there something i can use to see the exact wattage?
 
What I'm getting at is, there is more than one "power supply" in your system, consider VRM on the mainboard AND VRM on your video card.. sometimes they do not always use the best components for these VRM's and that causes issues elswhere...
 
my pc power and cooling 510 sli came in today. i swapped out the antec, put in the pcp&p, booted up, and no more noise.

x1900xt with crappy overloaded psu = chirping noise
x1900xt with overpriced psu = SWEET SILENCE!

i almost teared.

Now there's a different kind of noise, from that Sanyo fan back there. A PSU being overloaded probably won't be buzzing or hissing though. That noise typically comes from the vibrations from the ferrite torroids and doesn't indicate an overload for the most part.
 
the noise only started coming out of the psu when i replaced my x300 with the x1900. i assumed that the added load made the psu buzz and i was right.
