Antec sp-500 wierd noises

I recently upgraded to the dual core processor in my sig. I just moved my computer into my room and I noticed a high pitched whine coming from the vicinity of the power supply (Antec sp-500).

A search yields widely varying answers as to whether this is normal, but it did not make this noise before the upgrade, and the noise is there even when the computer is off. It is pretty annoying.

So, my question is this: is this a normal sound for a power supply, or is my supply going to break soon?

Thanks for the response. Also, when I press the power button on my computer, the power light on the case will turn on, but the computer will not power up for about 20 seconds. Could this be related to the power supply as well?

Yes

Damn, thanks for your help. I got back from work today and my computer won't even start. I guess it's time to RMA...

You said you moved the computer, did you try another electrical outlet? Did you upgrade in the other room before moving? It could possibly be an issue with that outlet, its probably the psu but its worth trying another outlet (preferably another circuit, the other room) and see if it still does it.

My computer is plugged into a UPS. Even if the outlet is dead, the computer should still turn on and the UPS should tell me if there is a fault in the line. Even so, I will try it in another outlet (and in the same outlet without the UPS) just to be sure.

Edit: I noticed that the whine was not present when the computer was not working. However, when I unplugged the ATX cable from the motherboard, the noise is back. I dunno if that is a good thing or not, but I hope it doesnt mean that the motherboard is the problem.

Hmm, With the ATX plug unplugged and the green wire shorted, the PSU starts up. Does this mean it is a problem with the motherboard (the high pitched whine is still there)?

It sounds like a coil on the motherboard is causing the noise, try powering up like normal and putting your finger on a coil (look like a circle with copper wire wrapped all around, it wont hurt you if you touch it) and see if the noise stops. It sounds like the psu is fine if you jump started it and theres no noise.

IIRC, that high pictched wineing noise may be from the Caps dying, I'm with david on this one. RMA.

When I power up the PSU without the motherboard plugged in, I get the high pitched whine. Also when the ATX cable was plugged into the motherboard, the whine was not present, but when I unplugged the cable, the whine came back. It would seem as though the motherboard is not the one making the whine noise (although it may be the cause of the problems).

I have submitted an RMA request with Antec and I am waiting for the RMA number. Do you think 500W is enough to power the computer in my sig (plus 2 HDs, and a DVD burner)? I thought 500W would be plenty, but maybe I am putting too much strain on the PSU and causing it to fail?

500W is plenty. See if you can get a NeoHE or Trio out of Antec though, for all your griefing.

Sorry I totally misread your post, its not the motherboard and its good your going to RMA the psu. Geesh, I need more sleep.

Thanks for your help folks. I have submitted an RMA request with Antec, but I don't expect to hear from them until Monday at the earliest. What are my chances of actually getting an upgraded PSU from Antec? Do they do that sort of thing?

I know that some brands will do that for you, OCZ is one of them. I don't know about Antec though, it is worth asking IMO.
