Antec PSU Tooo Quiet?

Well, i just bought a new psu, Antec Truepower II 550 watt. What worries me is how much air is being pushed by the fans. I could barely feel any air movement, i could confirm that the fan was alive visually though and after a few hours i can confirm it's moving at least a minuscule amount of air based on the heat rightoutside the outer psu fan.

I understand wanting to be "quiet" but it moves far less air then my almost silent 80mm case fans. Is this normal or is something broken here? Do these new powersupplies scale with power usage (fan speed)?
 
It might? Try checking the Antec site look at the specs and the features that it has. Hope all is okay.

So upon further inspection of the manual it does adjust based on power used but god is it cutting it close. THe air coming out is so hot and the fan speed is below 1k rpm.

But i'm not using much power right now with certain things unplugged and i haven't upgraded to pci express yet.
 
Well, the fan is responsive to the heat in the PSU, so maybe the PSU hasn't heated up enough to warrant a faster fan. I can tell you that mine never goes above 1.5k RPM, and it only goes around 1.5k when I'm doing something extremely CPU-intensive [Prime95, gaming, etc].
 
My Smart Power (SmartBlue), hovers around 1.2k RPM - 1.3K RPM, and it is also HOT.. Using 92mm intake, 80mm out on PSU..

Not sure about these Antecs..
 
Yeah. They're pretty quiet. Unfortunately, the long term results of this is buldging caps, etc. :(

But they seem to do alright when you design your entire case's thermodynamics around the PSU (not really such a bad idea, actually.) It's amazing how many people don't look at the whole picture when they put fans (and PSU's w/ fans) in their cases.

I actually worked with a system builder not too long ago that used that very PSU and he was having problems with heat in the case.

When he installed a 120 in the back that moved more CFM's, he created a venturi effect that made the PSU overheat. When he introduced more induction, the noise was unbareable. The solution was to use a PSU with a fan that moved more air. The PSU fan itself was louder, but the overall case noise was less because he could go back to the slower front and rear 120's.

What kind of time-frame are we talking here? If it's a month or two I'll be irritable, but if I have to buy a new PSU every year or so to avoid hearing my computer . . . well, I don't really give a shit.
 
Ugh, the hotness of the air coming from the psu and the the low cfm it's moving is annoying me far too much. I feel like opening it up and replacing the fans ><.

It's not an air pressure or case temp issue either. I initially looked it over with the case's side panel off and it was still not moving much air. For now i'm just going to trust antec's reputation... I still feel crappy about it though.

If this thing breaks i'mma rma it then void the warranty on the new one by replacing the fan. There are fans that run a few decibels lower then most of the other components in my pc (to the point of being silent in my ears) and still much more noticeable amount of air.

Totally subjective to how long it's on, how hot it is in the room when it's on, how hot it is in the case, etc. But you're talking about something that would more likely be 1 to 3 years, not months.
 
I have a Truepower II 550 in an antec sonata case. I have a 120mm fan on the rear, 120mm fan on the psu, and a zalman vf700 cooler on my 7800gt. Both 120mm fans are controlled by the fan only connectors on the psu. The system is really quiet. My computer has been on for 2 days solid and the little bit of air coming out of the back of the psu is warm but not what I would consider hot. Not sure if that helped you prove or disprove anything but that is my experience.

If I manage to keep a computer part for a year it's a miracle. I think I can live with that. Good to know though, thanks man.
 
I have an antec 550w EPS power supply in my computer (dual opteron system that I have had for over a year ;) ) and it gets incredibly hot and the fans push almost no air... whatever if it blows up it blows up... Ive often thought of changing the fans, but then I remember how lazy I am :p
