I just finished putting together a system that I could use for NAS and the first time I turned it on, this thick gray smoke started pouring out of the exhaust fan, I unplugged immediately and pulled the case apart to see what happened.

A power supply wire had completely burned through its sleeve and then the plastic net surrounding it and other wires. It was a red wire (the antec guy asked me what color it was, idk why) that was plugged into a floppy drive.

Why would it do that? It happened the second I turned it on after connecting my floppy drive.

As a rule you need a true short circuit to cause that kind of smoke and melting.

I've seen floppys smoke when plugged in backwards, not a psu. Did you look for pinched wires?

My big question to Antec would be, why didn't it shut down like it's supposed too?

Yes I checked for pinched wires, none. It's just a base NAS system inside a p180 case, in other words, it has plenty of room to breath and move around, aside from poor cable management. Haha

And yeah, I hadn't thought about that, it should have kicked off on it's own, I guess I didn't notice cause I got worried when I saw the smoke. Maybe I'll talk to Antec about that when I get a hold of them next, had I not been there, something could have actually caught fire and been disastrous to my home
