Antec Performance One case question - what are the ellipses?

I'm considering an Antec Performance One with the window pre-installed. I have two questions:

1) What are the ellipses on the window? Is that lighting? Vents? What the heck is that? lol

2) Are the case fans lighted at all? Does this case come standard with any lighting?

If you're referring to the Antec P160, which I believe you are, then the ovals on the windows are slightly indented plastic with a sort of frosted look to the edges. I don't mind them at all, nor do I love them. They work well with the three ovals on the lower front bezel. Standard lighting is the three LED's in the front ovals as well as the rear 120mm fan is Tri-Blue LED. Stock cooling on this case is HORRIBLE. I suggest getting some good 120mm to push some real air. I even found it necessary to cut a blowhole in the top center as airflow in this case is horrid.

Wow, really? I'd heard airflow through this case was good because it used two 120mm fans versus 80mm fans of other similar cases.

Is this everyones experience? Should I be looking at another case?
 
I just can't take the huge amount of bling on the P160... and airflow really is less than ideal. I don't agree with the previous poster that it is terrible, but it takes a lot of CFM to keep it cool.

I love my SX835II. It is beige and ugly... but it can get away with 2x japanaflo L1A's in the back running at half voltage in order to cool it. :)
 
My experiences with this case - I dont have the windowed version.

When I got the case I got idle CPU and HDD temps of 34C and 47C. :( The CPU was fine but my 2 Maxtor SATA 120gb's would reach 56C on load !!

First I cut 4 holes half inch by four inch across the bottom of each of the Drive cradles with a hacksaw- HDD temps went down to 44C idle 49C load - next I removed the cloth filter from the front panel and HDD temps were at 42C idle and 47C Load. Yesterday I removed the front panel grill as well as the shiny plastic attachement - now there is only the 3 ellipse holes and a square holed grill in front of the Antec Smartcool 120mm fan - and the temps are down to 38C idle and 43C load. At this time I had also attached a 92mm Fan to the inner side of the 3.5 internal HDD Bay Tray. The 2.4C CPU on my ASUS P4C800-E Deluxe Board is now idling at 29C.

Dust is now the only concern - I will probably have to open the case and clean it once a month. With the case without any mods I saw dust streak marks from the small holes all along the edges of the front panel as well as from the floppy drive slot.

I like the case a LOT. Very good to work with.
 
Get this case, add a blowhole and you have a very cool, spacious, cool looking (but classy) case.

Subman - how many fans are you running total now? Two 120mm case fans + the 92mm by the HDD? I'll be getting the windowed version that comes with the two 120mm fans. From what I understand the intake fan is mounted such that it blows the air directly on to the hard drives. Is that correct?

I'd appreciate pictures of your modification if you have them. I'm trying now to decide if I should go forward with this case purchase.

I've also got a thread going in the fans/cooling section and AMD processor section regarding fans/heat sinks for the socket 939 AMD FX-53 I'll be using. I'd love your opinions on that too if you've got them.

I want this computer to be quiet, but I can't afford to risk system stability. I'll be in law school and I absolutely cannot have this computer go down - I won't have the time to mess with it.
 
I have 3 Fans as you mentioned. The Antec 120mm Fans are quite silent but the 92mm Fan is a bit loud - it is made in Thailand By FlowMax or Flow Max. I have used this brand of Fans for years and have found them to have a very high speed but they are only 2 wired so do not know the actual RPM. I doubt you will need this extra Fan at your Room temps - it is around 30-35C the full year over here. And if I am not mistaken removing the front filters and grills will only add to your fan noise - which you dont want :D

My Sony Mavica Digital camera uses floppies to store its images and this drive is giving me trouble at the moment. If you want to see a thread about modding this case check this out .....

The 10th to 15th pictures from the top show what my face plate now looks like - behind this face plate is a square holed grill and then my front 120mm fan.

The front 120mm fan is right next to the 3.5" internal drive bay - but the this fan does not seem to have much cooling effect on the drives as there are aluminium plates alongside the drives which block out direct air flow.
